I was reading some threads on here the other day,and read that someone glues 2 - 4x4 together to make decoys will this work .Or use one block of wood .

Rick it will work, but is a little extra work. Make sure that none of the wood is center cut ( small circle of early growth in the middle). Also use a soft wood such as white cedar or white pine. leave no gaps in the glue

I found a shed where an old timer had glued 1" cedar boards, crisscrossing the grain, to make geese. My friend and I bought all these and have shaped them into geese.

Have at er!

Although I make almost all cork body decoys I have made dozens of tubafo and tubasix (2x4 &2x6) decoys' Every time this comes up I see a lot of posts that say "Don't do it!". I will be cutting out my next construction lumber decoy next week for one of my grandson's birthday.

You can do it several ways. What I have done in the past is screw my boards(2x8's) together from the bottom center. Cut out my overhead. Hot glue the pieces back on that you cut off. Cut out the side view. Carve out the body. Unscrew. Hollow using Forstner bits. Glue back together using epoxy.

Here is a good site for bandsawing blanks:

http://www.theduckblind.com/cyberclassroom/bandsawing/bandsawingarticle1.htm

Check around that site as it has a lot of great carving tips.

What Lee said. I cut the side profile first then the top without gluing the pieces back on. There is no need if you follow that cutting order.

Once upon a time I used to make the heads by glueing together construction grade wood. The glue line made a nice centerline. Did you get the patterns I sent you?

One more thing....... DO NOT get treated lumber. Treated lumber will give off toxic dust.

ALL WOOD give off toxic dust...some higher carconogenic (sp) properties than others...but yes the treated lumber is worse than not, especially if you live in California. Also, glues and paints do not bond as well to the treated wood.
