Robert Ruark once wrote "God created March in case eternity proved too brief". I for one am looking forward to a month of carving.
Finally warm enough in the garage to work with just a heavy shirt. Moving on to canvasbacks now. More shaping to do, but you get the idea.

This is my first attempt at carving a decoy, a Bull Can. I started it some time ago and haven't finished it yet.
I don't care for the body much, seems out of proportion and needs more work.
My buddy suggested taking about 3/4 of an inch off the bottom, to lower the profile. I think he's right. I've also been considering taking the head off and putting it on a lower profiled cork body and gunning over it.

Pat, I like those deep shoulders. I saw those and thought I have been doing it wrong. Don't be surprised to see something similar on my workbench down the road.
 
Bob, trust your pattern. Go ahead and finish it up, keel/float it and if you feel the body is still too tall adjust it on the next one. Every time I've cut something off the bottom I ended up wishing I hadn't.

Guess I'm used to seeing them (live divers) sit a bit lower on the water and the tail almost resting on it.
The head seems to have come out ok but needs some detailing.
Advice is always welcome,

Those deep wings are fantastic!!! And I really like the way you painted the hen. Very unique!

Have you thought about doing the Michigan Stamping on those deep wings? Or do you think it would be to busy?? Just curious

Colin, I like the style of your birds.
Finished up a BWT and a couple of coots. Hollowed white cedar bodies with tupelo heads.

Thanks! I've been using ronans and rustoleum for the white and black. I like how flat the paint dries but the only thing I don't like is how easily it scuffs. I have heard that mixing with tube oils helps this a little bit but I haven't experimented yet
 
Tony - I almost stamped these but opted to keep them simple. I would however stamp the deep wing carving in a minute! I think it would look great. Next pair...
