Mass. hunting question

I found out a buddy has a house on Little Neck on Plum Island Sound/Ipswich River.

When would be a good time to head up there for a shot at an Eider?

Sea DucksC (Scoter, Eider, Long-tailed duck)
Oct.06 - Jan. 24 07** 14**
Brant (Coastal Zone Only) Nov. 17 - Jan.24 3 6

This was last year's season. New seasons will not be posted until September 09.

Are you bringing your own boat? That side of Ipswich Bay is awesome for scoter hunting. Not too many eider there, but they can be had. There is usually one good flock that moves around out there. If you don't mind driving a little, you can go a bit south to Salem/Beverly or Marblehead. Or, hit Boston Harbor and hunt some of the islands. Or, the Dry Salvages and Straitsmouth Island on the Rockport side of Cape Ann. I like hunting sea ducks around Thanksgiving up here. There are plenty of fresh birds that have not been shot at or gotten wise to decoy spreads. From Thanksgiving to mid December is good. I've heard that Rhode Island and Narragansett Bay is also very good for eider.

As it gets closer to the date, let me know and I will keep an eye on the weather for you. I can make a copy of a map and mark off some spots and send that to you as well.

Dave, The Ohio crew will be on Plum Is the first week of Jan.....for the 6 year in a row. Yea, Hank Garvey takes us, along with his bud Johnny R..........we sure have fun and eat good.....but you east coasters eat like that all teh time....hehe

We shoot plenty of eiders then....why go when you duck season is still on?? What's why we go then. Yell if you want to talk, 216-870-3763.

Carving still?? Teal rig is almost ready. Best, Duane G.

I would be bringing my Bankes Goliath.

The Cape or RI would be good too, and Thanksgiving would be the best time for us to make the trip.

I'm at the very beginning stages of planning. The major goal is to shoot an eider, but scoters, goldeneye, brant....etc would be great too.

Thanks,

-D

January is OK, if you want to shoot an eider. It is more pass shooting then, in my opinion. There is nothing like having a flock of eider lock onto your spread from a quarter mile and come in on a string. Talk about tension and excitement. The brant usually blow out of here by mid December. We see them, but very rarely. Goldeneyes are plentiful along PI then and you'd have a good chance at shooting a few. Lots of mergs, oldsquaw, scoters, and buffles too. Do you have sleds?

Nate

I have some the NoDak boys coming east to hunt so the time of the year depends on them too. Jan might be doable.

I have some sleds around here somewhere, if not I can make some. I also have a bunch of herters 92 bodies that might have to become eidahs.

Might have to bring my sculler up too!

Still carving, but not really cranking them out. I was in NoDak last week and Matt and I carved a few goldeneyes. I hope to have a dz. ready for the season, then will do a few more random ones for the pool too.

I am definitely good at eating. Especially if I can use cold weather as my excuse for the extra insulation.

Will give you a shout tomorrow Duane, driving to NC in the morning.

I like the first part of December for sea ducks, the later in December you go the greater the chance of bad weather and it can be real sporty out there.

Dave,

Excellent eider hunting in early to mid December in Lynn harbor. Lynn is just north of Boston. Cold temps will dictate exactly when they arrive. Access is pretty good too.
