modifying a BBSB

I recently bought a classic style BBSB.All fiberglass construction.

For primarily safety reasons,I decided to increase the height of the
cockpit opening from the current 2.5 inches to 9-12".




Has anyone ever done this to their boat?

I need some ideas,construction methods/materials,do's /don'ts.

Increase the height of the coaming around the cockpit? You really won't need to do that. Look into getting a spray curtin properly installed onto the front deck. That will shed any waves that do break on the deck under power. Otherwise the boat will float up and over any wave from any direction within reason. If you find yourself taking waves into the cockpit you are in the wrong place, wrong time, and the 9" coaming won't help. Check w/ Dave Clark on this site. I had a similar setup on an old sneakbox I bought from someone in NJ.
The original owner had built boards for around the cockpit (they called them bulletboards) that could be put on in seconds.

Try to picture this:
-sprayshield (from a southbay duckboat) was on the bow end of the cockpit. The original owner took either a 1x6 or 1x8 and ran it along both sides of the cockpit and the stern end as well. 3 pieces in all. On each of the pieces, he fabricated a bracket from wood. There were 3 brackets on the side pieces and 2 on the stern piece.
-the plank sat on the inside of the cockpit and extended to the bottom edge of the coming. There was a spacer block the thickness of the coming that was attached just above the coming and then another piece of wood that attached to the spacer and extended over the coming to the top of the deck. if you were to hold the plank in your hands standing on edge and look straight down you should see a lower case h. That way they just slide over the edge of the coming and are in place in seconds.
