Modifying cockpit

I got a nice little higher this winter. The cockpit is a little small for me the boy and dog. I?m thinking of cutting old one out about six inches back and twelve or so forward. Building new cockpit from 1x4. Backing it from inse with pl and screws. Then glassing it in. Am I on the right track or way off?

Not exactly sure what vessel you're talking of. One thing to keep in mind is you may need to ballast the boat if you remove a good chunk of material. The duck boat I overhauled for a friend almost sank this year because we forgot to. Granted we removed about 12 square feet of material. Ended up putting some concrete (180lbs) under the new forward deck we built to keep it right.
