motor for power tools

Have any of you with power tools ever had to replace a motor on one of your tools? Several of my motors were ruined after Katrina flooded my workshop, but I am having trouble finding replacements. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

I buy motors on ebay for tools I'm restoring. I look for Baldor since they are US made and steer clear of the imports. What motors are you looking for? You can find the vitals on the nameplate like rpms, hp, phase, and NEMA mount.

small hand tools get to be a problem to find motors but stuff like bandsaws, table saws etc with the big elec motors are easy. try Grainger, Habor freight, Northern Hyduralics , Farm supplies or ebay.
Like Eric said look at the tag and get the info you will need

Yep, Baldor's are the top pick in my book...make sure you get the correct amp and rpm motor for the tool...nothing like flipping the switch on the table saw and having the blade spin at router speed....or trying to cut a piece of wood and blow the breaker or smoke the capacitor.

Hate to bring this up again, but does a 2 hp sound about right for an old Craftsman table saw? I don't know what hp was on it before. Also, would that be large enough for a Joiner??

Thanks,

Bob

2 hp is plenty for a Craftsman tablesaw, assuming it's a contractors style. That would be on the small side for a cabinet saw but way back when that was a common hp even on unisaws and 66s. 2 hp is PLENTY for a jointer up to 12". Whay tou need to know is things like are the rpms correct and does it have the correct mount. Seeing the nameplate from the motor that came off the machine is the best way to get that info.
