my new boat

I started to do some work on it, I have never done any fiberglass work before. Does anyone have any tips for me? What are good products to buy?

No, No,No, Wiz, Take his sack of decoys and hide them in one of the Bear dens. And hope you can find them in the fall!

I just finished reading Gordon's writings. Your post made me smile. Hitch started it :)

Have a great day.

I'm not sure how many bear dens there are left in Wisconsin, but Hizzoner is definitely still running the show up there :)

Actually it looks a lot like a Dan Kidney boat. They were built in DePere in the early 1900's. Had several models, several of them are on display at the Museum down in Mannitowoc.

first question is does it have a wood core or is it solid fiberglass? Might only need some surface sanding and repaint job. If it is peeling up (delaminating) fiberglass from wood, chances are you might need to either do patches or compete reglass.

answer those questions first and that will help us get you on the way.

As for Wiz Boz/Hitch thanks for the reminder of Hizzoner...I have several on Audio Tape and Mac's books, makes me smile right now, seeing geese flying north, few mallards buzzed overhead, cloudy overcast day making me long for the marsh...

there is no wood all glass. There are 3 spots where there are cracks in it from impacts they were fixed once but not very good. I want to re do these areas and give it a paint job

couple of ways to attack this, depends on how much you want to do and what level of finish you are after.

I personally would just pick up some fiberglass, say 4-6 oz glass, won't need much given the size of that boat. I would then pick up some epoxy. Sand the paint all off, get down to the glass on both sides. Cut out some patches at least 4-6" larger than the cracked area. Wet out the area with plain resin, lay the glass, then wet out all the glass. I would probably lay 1-2 layers on the outside, and 1 on the inside like this. Again, depending on how severe an how large of an area this is. This should probably do it. Once fully cured in a few days, LIGHTLY sand and repaint.

this is the place I use for my glass/epoxy.

http://www.raka.com/ is the place alot of other guys use from this forum.

I have no sources of EPOXY in Green Bay other than buying WEST System and that is too rich for my blood.

Old guy on Main street, Siefert's sold polyester resin and glass, just around the corner to the east from Mason, don't know if he/son is still doing it, but the glass you would not have to ship, but DO NOT try to use polyester resin for this job, epoxy will stick and the PE will have problems in my book.

Other ways to do it, this is one.

Good luck, post some pics when you are done.

This may be a dumb question but what about the bondo fiberglass and resin? Does it work ok or not. I was going to go to Seiferts to see what they have, I see that they are still in the phone book so hopefully they are still open. Thanks for the help.

You mean the new 3M products - 3M just purchased bondo a few months back.

Most of the Bondo I am guessing that you are referring to would be polyester resin. Epoxy is better as has been mentioned in previous postings. Personally, I've never had a problem sticking polyester to polyester.

First off, from one Green Bay guy to the next, welcome aboard.

Second, I would skip Sieferts and just order some epoxy and cloth from U.S. as Eric said. You could use the bondo cloth, but not sure on what the weight is. Or run to Woodcraft inAppleton and pick up some System 3, little more costly, but you have it right away.

Lastly, work in either a heated garage or wait till it's warmer, epoxy takes forever in the cold to cure.

If you want some help/guidance one day, give me call 360-7209 (cell), I live on the far west side.

Thanks for the offer I will take you up on that when it gets warmer and I start on it. What would I be looking at for cost from Woodcraft? If I can get stuff localy I do. Just due to the fact if I order off line my wife then sees the credit card statement and that is not good=) I am in Ashwaubenon so I imagine that I am close to you. Where do you do most of your hunting, mine is on the bay I hope this boat works out good. I have a 16 foot boat with a nice blind but too many birds flare from it so I am going to go this route this year. I got way more shooting when I went off shore in the catails I had a guy in a lay out boat by me in november and he stole all the birds away from my boat.

Quart of resin goes for about $28 and harder about $23, way cheaper to order from U.S. Composites, but Woodcraft has the "I need it now" factor.
