I decided to take a break from cutting firewood and have some lunch. So, I opted to take the Mule and drive down to the rio to change the scenery just a bit.
When I do things like this I like being prepared so I had my folding chair along, my shotgun, 3 shells in my pocket, and enough clothes to keep Santa warm. It was cold yesterday.
I was about to take a bite of my sandwich when my cell phone rang and I noticed it was Bev. "Where do you want to eat tonight?" she asked me. "How come you want to go out, Hon, because it is usually me asking you if you'd like to go out?" I thought this was rather strange.
Bev then went on to tell me how Salsa, who has her pups in the house, decided to reach up on the counter and eat the 3 pieces of chicken breasts that she was preparing for supper. She started to laugh and so did I. Both of us had forgotten that Salsa will reach up and take anything that isn't attached.
Bev hung up and I continued to watch the ice flow down stream on the Rio Grande. It is a rare sight for me to see ice. As I was sharing my sandwich with Habi and not paying a whole bunch of attention, the drake gadwall caught me by total surprise, because all of sudden there he was. At that particular time, my sandwich fell to the ground as I grabbed my Nova. I found out quickly that Habi has her priorities, also. She went for the sandwich and evidently thought, "The hell with the duck."
As you will see when looking at the drake, it was very evident why Habi re-positioned this duck three times on her way back to me. Damn cockleburs!
I was going to go hunting this morning but nixed that idea after I looked at the thermometer. It read 9F. That means that down in the valley by the Rio Grande it most likely is about 4F or 5F. This older frame of mine doesn't handle cold like it once used to. Besides that, there will be way too much ice in the rio and that is not good for setting up decoys and or for Habi.
Maybe I should go back to this spot today for lunch---
The pups are growing like weeds. They sure are fun to watch and hold. Salsa is doing a great job with them. There are 5 females and 4 males. One of the black males was sold the day it was born! Have another couple from Fort Bliss coming to pick out a pup in 3 more weeks. Time sure flies when you are having fun.

Took these pictures about 30 minutes ago. Just look at those fat tummies! They are exactly 6 days old. Boy, did that bring back memories of last Saturday morning, roughly just past 2:00AM when the first black male was born. I then had to hire a puppy sitter to watch the pups when I went to pick up Bev at the Albuquerque airport that night and by the time I got home, just knew I was coming down with something. The flu bug got me good.
