My son was goosed again

I cannot manage to get a goose for my son. This is his third year hunting and still goose less. We regularly shoot skeet and 5 stand and he out shoots some adults. Ok the first year he was 10 and just did not get a good chance. Last year we hunted for goose several times and I put geese in front of him, including a very nice easy crossing shot where he forgot to slide the safety off.

Over the weekend I drove 3.5 hours into a goose hot spot, spent 4 hours scouting and found what I hoped was the X. This morning we were on the spot all set. I nice flock came in circled and set their landing gear down and settled into the pocket. Sweet 3 beautiful geese settling in right in front of him, 2 in front of me and another half a dozen 5 yards behind. Up he comes up when they were 15 yards out, 5 feet off the ground in full surrender. I confirm with a "take 'em" He fired and so did I. I took my two and he took nothing. He could have taken one with a rock. I can not get him a goose and it is killing me.

Good morning, David~

I am sure this circumstance will resolve itself. Sounds to me like he might be doing what I still sometimes do - after 50 years. On those really easy, "How could anybody miss?" shots, my head is up off the stock and the shot is way too high. Or....after shooting at those little tiny ducks, it can be hard to realize that those enormous, very slow, lumbering behemoths are actually moving over the ground/water - and the gun needs to be moving along with them.

Best of luck to your son - these days will soon become just a good story to tell.

another mistake he might be making is focusing on the head when the geese are coming in. make sure when you tell him to shoot dropping geese to tell the feet. More than likely it is just a case of his nerves getting the best of him. Don't worry it will come.

David, things like this happen however it is not the end of the world even if it seems so. Mark my word that there will be a day in which you will look at your son and say, "Our freezer is only so big and from now on here is the list which you must abide by. No more than the allowed bag limit on geese and ducks. Only two deer, etc, etc!" Be patient because there is "that" day in which everything will click.

Thinking back to when I was 12 the burdens that got in my way the most were not messing up everything for everyone else and not letting my dad down.

To me it sounds like you're doing exactly the job you, the dad, are supposed to be doing: making opportunities possible.

After that, it's up to him on getting the goose.

Biggest job a dad has is helping pick up the pieces the son just left on the blind floor after missing the slam dunk.

2nd biggest job: making sure he doesn't get too cocky after finally getting the slam dunk ;-)

Keep up the good work. He might not know it yet, but he already has an irreplaceable relationship most kids will never know....

So THAT's why I miss the meatball shots! Ha!

His head does not swell (well does not swell much) when he does something well but I do hear about it over and over again. This year during youth day he took a pair of woodies with a one shot double. If heard that at least once a day for a week and every other day since.

David, when a hunt all comes down to one opportunity, it is real tough. I find when I am on a hunt with multiple shooting opportunities, I loosen up and get better, the more I shoot. I think you might do well to find a venue where your son will get many chances to shoot and he will surprise you, might even outshoot his dad. Rich
