Nails Breaking

Kodi has been having quite a few toe nails splitting... DO any of you know how to stop this? A few of the nails have not been short.. but others are.

Phil, A dog's nails need to be kept short. Just as with our fingernails, they never stop growing. Most of our dogs don't run on rough ground or concrete enough to keep them short. Our five chessies all get their nails ground on a regular basis. We use a Dremel. They accept that more than clipping. Short nails are necessary not only for our show dogs, but vital for overall foot health. Imagine us guys walking around with 2 inch toenails! Long toenails can cause the toes of the dog to splay out and even tear the skin between the toes (the webbing.) This, in turn, can cause gait problems and then structural problems.

I have never had to clip my dogs toe nails, as they were on a concrete kennel. But since I have been working at home Kodi is out much more... the nails aren't breaking so much as splitting... this isn't to say he couldn't use a trimming but, I didn't know if there was something out there to strengthen the nails...

My wife would say that my toe nails are like tallons.... so...... :s

Mane & Tail Hoofmaker is something I used to use. It's a lotion. I've also used a nail "polish" that is really more of a supplement than a "polish". It's called "Nail Envy" by OPI . . . you can buy it at hair salons. I've always used the matte finish.

Ya know . . . the products I just mentioned strengthen the nail . . . which also makes them grow faster . . .

Phil,

Rich hit the nail on the head.

I walk my pup 5 - 6 miles a day and I still have to trim his nails regularly. If I don't keep his nails short, he'll split them in no time -- particularly on winter ice.

I'm skeptical that any product can prevent an active dog from splitting un-trimmed nails.
