NDR: Any seasoned I Pod owners?

I just got an Ipod Nano for Christmas! I'm not real e-saavy, but I love the idea of having all my music on this thing rather than watching scratched up CDs bounce around on my dash.

I'm looking around at the Ipod website, but was hoping I could get short, simple answers from somebody(s) here.

I don't have internet at home. Do I need Itunes to use this thing? Can I get Itunes w/o internet? I generally get a little internet time at work or at the library.

Is it a problem to download tunes off others' itunes? I realize there may be some legal/ethical issues here, but my brother thinks there is a limit to the number of computers you can use to load your Ipod.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Thanks for the info!

Nick,

I'll ditto what Dutch said. You can download a complete manual for your Ipod off their web site. The thing about using others computers, is that your Ipod will only accept songs from one computer at a time. In other words, you can not use some some songs from your computer then go to your friends and put more on your Ipod from their computer. Yes you can put a song(s) on your Ipod from their computer but in doing so, the ipod will write over the previously loaded songs. Even when adding a song off your home computer, each time you reload songs to your Ipod it will be a complete reload and not just adding to what is already on your Ipod.

Again, first thing Id suggest is to download and read the complete manual. The printed info provided with your Ipod is very skimpy and the full blown manual is much better.

Great gift. You'll love it.

Actually, you can have any computer set up to "share" with 5 others and they can do the same. If you are on your friends "buddy list" you can get songs from them. I also believe that you can choose how you want your Ipod to work with the computer. You can set it up to automatically "update" the Ipod or you can choose to do it manually. If you choose the manual route, when you plug the Ipod into the computer, you can choose what songs you want to load onto the Ipod. One other tip, if you plan on listening to your Ipod through anything other than the supplied earbuds, you may want to upload music to ITunes at a higher bitrate than the standard rate of I think is 96bit. Change it to 128 or higher and the quality difference is huge. You wont be able to have as many songs on the Ipod but the quality, if played over a home stereo or through quality earbuds or headsets is noticable.

You do need ITunes to load songs onto the Ipod and you need a computer to do so unless you have the IPod Touch which allows you to download songs via any WiFi network.

I see you have a couple of choices. If you don't have access to a computer, but do have access to a buddies computer who already has ITunes, have them make a folder for just your song library. If you go to the Apple Website and type in "how do I use 2 Ipods on one computer", they will give you three options on how to do so. You will need to use your buddies computer to upload any songs you want on the Ipod but you could at least have your own folder.

Other option would be to trade in the Ipod you got and go with the Touch. It will cost more and then you can only purchase music from ITunes or other sites where you can get music via the internet. I got my son an IPod Touch 8GB for Christmas and found them on sale through Best Buy for $179 - or $30 more than a new Nano. The WiFi access alone was worth the $30. Look for stores that offer a in store gift card if you purchase an IPod. I know that Target is now offering either a $20 or $25 gift card with a Touch purchase.

I just got a cool addition to my Ipod. My wifey gave me the Apple Airport Express which allows me to carry my IPod Touch around with me and stream my music from my Ipod to my home stereo. So, I can now literally carry my entire music library around the house with me and choose from the IPod the song I want to hear. It then goes from the Ipod to my computer and then wirelessly to the Airport Express which then plays through my stereo. When I built the house, I wired the whole thing for music and video distribution and IR access from anywhere to any piece of equipment. It took some figuring on how to make this all work but I love this kind of stuff.

Cool Mark,
I got an Airport Express for Christmas to! We had nonstop christmas music streaming throughout the whole house yesterday. I need to get an iPod Touch so I can skip the songs I don't like without going back to the computer.

It works way slick. If you get it, give me a shout out and I can save you much grief if you have a secure wireless network system. I was totally impressed with both the Apple and the Linksys support as they took all the time I required, never ever rushed me, and ensured that my stuff, all my stuff (and I have LOTS of wireless stuff going on in this house) was up and running properly.

You'll like the Touch. I miss the old clickwheel for certain things as it is easier than the Touch. I like all the other stuff that comes with the Touch however - it outweighs the clickwheel.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the wealth of info. I have a puter at home, I just don't have internet. So I'm thinking I can take the puter to work, hook it up, download i tunes and then take the puter home again. I'm thinking I'll be in good shape just consolidating my CD collection to Ipod, but sooner or later maybe I'll want to download music.

I like the net for email and a few discussion boards like this, but I'm not really huge into technology. I don't like shopping online.

Thanks again!

Nick, I don't believe this!! I got an Ipod for my birthday and have been listening solid for 5 days now. I am a self proclaimed non techno geek but this one is really cool. I got the cassette looking car adapter too for the road trips. Haven't tried it yet but am already planning for something to play it in the house. I got a free speaker from Best buy and that isn't too bad for me. The ear bud/ headphone setup doesn't appeal to me at all so I am looking for other ways. I just loaded all my CDs from my computor on it so far. Will be buying some from Istore when I figure that out. I'm still working on geting pictures sized fit to post here, must be related to one more birthday? " You can learn more here by accident than anywhere else by design"

Hey Tom -

Give me a shout out and I can help you with that Ipod in a number of ways. Fisrt, this type of stuff is my other hobby and secondly, I am an electronics distibutor (side business) and can get some of this stuff less expensively than what you would pay at Best Buy.

Maybe I can return the favor you provided last year when working on the weedeater mud motor. I'm around.

Do you have access to a 12 year old kid? He/she will get you set up correctly. Mine did at the time (almost 16 now, yikes.)

I'm not sure if you can transfer the CD's and get the CD/song names transferred without an internet connection. You also can't get software updates.
