NDR Assateague Island

My wife is planning a trip and would like to stop down at the Assateague Island area to see the wild horses. My understanding is that there is a Maryland and a Virginia side.

Any tips on which is better? I don't believe that she plans on spending the night there, just a day stop for a few hours or so.

Any insight would be appreciated

Of course Im going to say that the VA side is better! haha. Ive never actually been to the MD side but I know every tiem Ive been there I see the ponies and plenty of waterfowl and other birds. The beach area parking and facility is down to nothing after a bad nor'easter we had a few years back. you have to cross Chincoteague to get to the VA side and its a prett nice place to visit if you've never been there. A few carvers still have stands/shops open on the island as well.

Mike, it has been a long time since i've been. I seem to remember the VA side having more viewing areas. Don't base her trip on that, hopefully someone here has more experience. We saw lots of horses/ponies.

not to hijack the thread, but I am going to Chinco for a hunt in December, and I was trying to see if the Refuge museum is still open. After a google search the number listed has been disconnected. Is the museum still there?

I know that she isn't looking to do a lot of soft seeing since this will be a short stop. Just want to see the most in the shortest amount of time and the kids mainly want to see the horses

I just came back from there.

Been to both. I would recomend the VA side. A little more to get to it, but a lot more wild and secluded. There are a couple of nice visitor's centers there. After 3 pm, they open the "Wildlife Loop" on the island to cars. It's a great little 3 1/2 mile ride. You can walk it, but I wouldn't. Mosquitos are more than bad this time of year, more like "unbearable". Ponys are usually around somewhere. Sometimes they'll be up by the road, sometimes only visible with binoculors. You just never know.

Also along the main drag is a neat little Merritime Museum. It's free as are the visitor's centers. Doesn't take much time to go thru, but interesting nonetheless.

Couple pretty good places to eat on the Island too. We like the Crabshack for lunch. If you want something a little nicer, AJ's on the Creek or Bill's Seafood are good. The Village is our favorite. There is a McD's and Subway too if you like.

Ponys you should be able to find:

Unfortunately, the Refuge Waterfowl Museum has been closed for a couple years. I did notice the outside of the bulding had a fresh coat of paint on it this year though, so maybe there is hope for the future.

Just to let you know what you're missing in the museum:

Thank you for taking the time to post. I will pass along to my wife and also make sure that she has the camera ready

Been to the museum a few times, and worth every cent. Just dont go there when they have the horse round up. 20,000 people its crazy

We go on Columbus Day weekend in October and stay in the state park on the MD side. Usually great wheather, 70s in the day 40s at night. Nothing like camping on the beach 100 yards from the surf. Normally have horses walking through the camp site. Quite a few deer around too.
