Further proof - Last Thursday I went for SM Bass using my old pan fish popper rod. A Southbend Graphite Plus 6 wt. with a even older PK #105 reel. Long story short, no top water action, and had to switch to a bead head streamer. Caught fish from 10" to 19", but that set up (my use and abuse rod&reel) gave me a helluva workout...
Next day took my 6 wt. Powell, SA reel, with much better line and leader. Much better balance, smoother casting, getting line back on the reel, and playing fish better prior to release. I bought the Powell in 1989, the SA reel in 1991. Have caught almost all warm water fish, and trout and steelhead on the rig. Had a Muskie work the drag so hard it popped the rivet holding the prawl. LL Bean repaired it for free.
Just like all things. The proper tool for the job makes a world of difference. "Cheap is not good and good is not cheap". That said, havin' a rig that works, if you break or loose it, won't hurt your pocket as much (as memories). IS worth having, (just like a reliable Boat Shotgun) and always in your vehicle ready to Work. Cuz - "They're Lurkin' In The Murk!"
