NDR--inexpensive scoped .22

Anyone have experience with a Savage Mark II bolt action .22 rifle.?

I'm looking for an inexpensive scoped .22 for (1) an educated woodchuck who has avoided my live trapping efforts and is all over my garden; and (2) having a rifle on hand to teach my hnephew to shoot in a few years when his mother allows it. Pretty sure there is a youth stock available for this gun.

Dicks has the Savage Mark II with a cheap scope for $250. Don't want a collectors gun or a competition target rifle, just something safe, accurate enough, and inexpensive. I will never be a serious rifle shooter. Other suggestions welcome.

I cannot speak to that rifle. I do have a Savage 93T17 BTVSS. It was about $400 plus scope and it is a TACKDRIVER... if this Mark II is similar... sounds like a great deal.

Thanks Phil. I confess to being flummoxed by getting information from Savage's website, but if I squint and read between the lines correctly, I believe the Mark II is the .22 cal version of of the 93 series, which is available in .17 cal.

My sons 11th birthday was a couple of weeks ago, and I bought him a Ruger 10/22. Basspro had them on sale for $229.00. It came with a rail to mount a scope. We picked up a cheap scope for $40 bucks. We've shot probably 300 rounds through it. So far no failures, and deadly accurate.

Thanks Jeff. That was my other option, but I'd rather have a bolt action to teach my nephew before I put a semauto in his hands. The 10/22 is a classic, though . . . . . .

Love my 10/22! At least did when .22 used to be always on the shelf. Mine is accurate enough to put game on the table. The .17... at 85 yards.. Nikon optic... prone off sandbags... my wife can shoot sub MOA and 3 of 5 touching...

Great call! A bolt gun is best to start a young shooter with.

A bolt action Remington .22 Model 582 & old Bushnell Custom 4X, has worked very well for me for many years. Picked it up off a used, but not abused, gun rack at a gun shop I trusted. As long as I feed it the ammo it likes it keeps plenty of Squirrels in the pot. Every time I want to buy a new .22, which seems to be each year. I give the 582 a good bore and bolt cleaning, take it to the range, sight in, practice and keep it for another season.

Another vote for a bolt gun. The Savage rifle line is pretty solid right now, they have a loyal following in their price range.

Great gun for what you want to do. If some one is buying a person their first gun, go bolt action. Learn the basics of shooting, sighting and breath control.
I have sold many guns for kids. Most parents think they are helping their kids. One parent bought a 10/22, 5 bricks of 22's and ten magazines. In a hour the son was out of ammo, 500 rounds. Nothing learned...

But he had a HELL of a lot of fun!!!!!!! :)

Phil, that's what I was thinking also. Like taking kids pan-fishing, lots of action, fun and success to hook them for life. I fondly remember going to the sand pits and blowing off a brick a day w/ an old Steven's semi. Hooked me and eventually I ended up shooting high power rifles competitively, both DCM & 4 position, with service and match rifles, with club small bore matches thrown in for fun and practice.

Ruger 10/22 gets my vote. We have 2 different setups at home. Loads of aftermarket parts and trigger assemblies for these as well. Nice and affordable or you can put some serious money into these guns. We love them at the range

I have a mark II. It's the laminated stock bull barrel. Traded a Remington semi auto for it. The accuracy is impressive. You can research on www.rimfirecentral.com. It seems the savage mark II and CZ's rimfire are tops for accuracy until you make a big jump in $$. I have read a few complaints about the magazines but I haven't had any issues. I'm very happy with mine. Good luck with whatever you go with

The magazine on my 17 is junk. If you drop it shells fall out. I'm going to investigate after market. That is my only complaint with mine

Thanks everyone. Sounds like I am on the right track though you 10/22 fans may disagree . . . . .

I''m pretty sure that choice would work for me, too, at about the same cost.
