sometimes a dog needs to go for an adventure
adventure is good
there are places up over the hills where a guy and a dog can just disappear
off of the radar
although the time we have off of the radar is brief
it is always very good
the duckbomber is broken down so we had to figure out a way to get out for a day afield
to “pull a rabbit out of the hat”
kaden recently caught a rabbit in our yard and seemed quite proud
the rabbit didn’t make it
so we cooked it in a stew
we left the house at 0500 hrs
after getting a good rolling flame on some cherry and maple
anya would never let me back in the house if i left her cold in the morning
so i never will
the road was sketchy and i was the only one out on it
i live in a place that is pretty hard to beat
as far as scenery goes
so i pulled in and took a shot of the big mountain
i took the red dog to a place i had been with different dogs
bout 10 years back
we had some action there back then
and as we approached the place
we saw all kinds of tracks
the sun way out
the sky was blue
it was 11* and the wind was blowing 20- 30 mph
i set the boy loose and we just walked along
he looked back at me
“what you want me to do?”
i took him to some fresh rabbit tracks and sign they’d left behind
held it in my hand and said “go find it, where is it?”
he thought on it for a moment
“i think i understand”
he notioned
“good, it’ll come to you when the time is right”
i answered.
soon he was on scent
he bolted back and forth and his tail wagged so much that i thought it might just snap off in the cold.
i noticed the tracks and as soon as i snapped the photo of them
the entire area erupted in sage hens
must have been a dozen
too bad that we are not in sage hen season
“good boy kaden, you found them”
he went ballistic for a few minutes,
i couldn’t blame him.
as i have hunted those flats for over 15 years and never seen a single one
these were not the only ones we’d encounter
we bumped nearly 50 of the birds in 4 covies.
the red boy asked
“what is that called when we bust a bunch of big bombers that we are not allowed to shoot?”
i said
“that is called being flummoxed”
“we should stop flummox hunting then,
maybe we should go for a rabbit”
he pondered
it is tough to hunt and roust game that you have to hold your fire on
especially for a dog that is just learning about how it all works
so i figured that we could enjoy a little fetch
it is always open season for fetch around here
it is another matter to handle a sloppy
half slobbery/ half ice ball
and a camera.
but the red boy was well behaved
he brought the ball back to me and i was happy
we set up in one last place where i could let the boy quarter into the wind
i figured that with all of the tracks
we’d have to kick up a rabbit
it is really difficult to sneak up on a rabbit when the snow is the kind where you step a foot down, and then it cracks and sounds like you are walking on styrofoam blocks
at last kaden lit up
nose down and tail wagging
he was in a frenzy
i figured it would be another bunch of sage hens
he froze solid
the rabbit exploded out of the sage and bounded
kaden was hot on it
i brought the little side by side up and let fly
both barrels went off at once!
the rabbit cart wheeled in a puff of snow
kaden ran and fetched it like he’d done it all his life.
“ha ha, i’ll be damned kaden,
we won’t have to go home empty handed!”

He’s learned to pull a rabbit out of his hat
So he’s a magician in my book
