Mike came up to my girlfriend's house Saturday to help me with a project for her.....remove a wall to open the dining room to the kitchen. Our plan went from a conventional 2-by header beam, to an 8x8 oak timber that she came home with, to Mike and I going back to the farm for two 8x4 timbers for columns....got to see the farmer fire up his pre-WW2 sawmill and cut an 8x10 timber down to what we needed.
The end result is this:

Talking with the farmer, some years back he built a 14ft Arthur Armstrong Broadbill that he still has, and used to carve some decoys. He showed us some white pine logs around 36" or bigger that looked to contain some really good decoy blocks....Hope he cuts them that way.

Got to see his maple syrup evaporator as well. He makes around 50 gallons/year.

Pretty neat place.

Thanks again for the help Mike

Jim,

Those reclaimed barn beams are awesome. They have history and character all wrapped up in one. I wish I could get away with a project like that one.... Nice work.

That is a wonderful idea. Now to get the rest of it completed. Good luck! Ceramic tile kitchen floor?

Dave, not reclaimed...first use. They were stored outdoors and just have the natural weathered gray look.....and HEAVY....took 4 of us to get the beam up.

Al, the plan is to get a good flooring guy to tooth in additional hardwood floor and extend it throughout the kitchen. I believe that's the current trend. I just nod my head, smile and tell her how beautiful she is.

And Mike is a great guy and a ton of laughs. Looking forward to doing some decoy carving together.

Jim,
I will see you at the CWA dinner in April. I need to get some stuff done in the house or I might be living in the shed.

Hey Chris,
I think I have been taking more than giving lately. Tell that girlfriend and sister congradulations, and if they need someone to show them how to hunt, Sal and I would be happy to show them.
