NDR: Too hot to fish

It's been a hot summer here in central Florida so far. The afternoon thunderstorms have been sparse, and when that happens it gets HOT here in the afternoons. Last week I checked the weather one afternoon and it was 99 degrees with a dew point of 72. My experience when it's that hot out is fishing is pretty miserable. In order to beat the heat and still get my outdoors fix I've gotten into spearfishing over the last few years. I have numbers for dozens of small rock reefs in 5-12 FOW in the gulf that are usually good for small Mangrove snapper and an occasional Gag Grouper. My last trip was on Wednesday. I took the day off work and shot my limit of 5 snapper. I missed a big sheephead and saw several grouper all too small to shoot. Bay scallop season is open on the gulf this time of year so I stopped and picked up my 2 gallon limit before heading in for the day. The two bigger snapper are about 14" and the rest were 11-12" I believe. Nothing to set the world on fire, especially compared to serious spearfishers, but it's a fun way to get some good vittles. The gulf was HOT, 93 on the surface, wasn't even very refreshing to get in the water. I don't have an underwater camera, so a cooler shot is going to have to suffice.

Yeah Buddy!!!!

spearfishing is awesome, you guys are lucky down there, you can go year round and there area myriad of species to tag. catch per unit effort is way higher in my opinion.

I'm jealous on the scallops.

if you end up in new england for vacation before i move ill get you on some black fish.

Nice bunch of fish, Andrew. With your temps at 93F I wonder what your humidity rate was? Two days ago it was 106F and yesterday dropped to 105F The Rio Grande is flowing at 14cfs. Not good. This is the hottest July on record so far.

Well 93 was the water temp, so I guess the humidity was 100%?!?!

Haha in all seriousness though, I don't pay a lot of attention to what the relative humidity is. Usually the dew point is somewhere in the low or mid 70s, which means it's plenty humid. Our air temps are usually moderated by the ocean and the high humidity, so even though we have 100+ days per year with temps in the 90's, it almost never cracks 100 degrees. I live in Ocala, which is about 40 miles from the gulf and 60 from the Atlantic, so our temps aren't moderated quite as much as the coastal towns.
