Phil,
Any idea of the barrel year? Just picked up a bottle of Russell's Reserve that is a 12yr.bottle. Very smooth for a single malt. Pleasing over rocks. She has a lil' bite to her but not to bad. If you find Rowan's Creek single malt snatch it up. I found a bottle of it last year while in Austin and it was at the ripe ole' age of 21 yrs. Very Smooth! I haven't been able to find any of it here in NC and do to the state having the monopoly on liquor sales I can't order any... AAARRRGGGHHH!
www.whitetailwhiskey.com not scotch. Couldn't drink a lot of it...but an after dinner drink by the fireside would be nice
But I normally prefer Glenfiddich 15 year Solera Reserve.... Walker Blue Label is very smooth.... McCelland's Islay and Tomatin are very nice budget single malt....
Is it very strongly flavored? I haven't really get into the flavored whiskeys. Red Stag pretty much tasted like cough syrup to me...not bad cough syrup but still not whiskey. I guess it is a way to make bourbon drinkable. That should get someone going. hahaha
I stick to mostly Canadian whiskey. Been pretty happy with Forty Creek on the rocks, Crown for shots and whatever is the cheapest for mixing. I can get McAdams for $5.99 a fifth.
Some day I'm going to have to try a better scotch. I have only had Walker Black and that isn't happening again anytime soon.
The carmel flavor wasn't overly strong, but it was more like a liqueur (sp) than liquor. I didn't think it was like cough surup. I only got one of the airplane bottles to sample... I saw their add in the last DU magazine... I guess advertising does work!
For normal consumption.. it is Black Velvet here... Under $13 FOR A TEXAS 5th...
The Tomatin and McClellands are under $20 for a 5th..
Balvenie Founders Reserve or Double Wood
Was in Scotland a couple years ago for my youngest son and daughter inlaws destination wedding. Love to go back
Well being a native of Kentucky...You guys can keep the Whiskey...I will sip the bourbon...Just joking, it all whiskey except in the Common Wealth of Kentucky....
I will still sip the 1792...On the rocks...Slightly settled when the ice melts enough to produce a nice burgandy color...MMMMM...Smell the caramel and the charred barrel...
Dry Fly Distilling in Spokane, WA makes a good single malt Wheat Whiskey! I helped bottle, package, and stack a few pallets this winter for a free shirt, hat, and samples!!!
My Dad used to tell the story of when he moved to Wabash, IN in the late sixties and went into the local roughneck bar with a friend. A few people knew him and he felt welcome. A nasty looking guy walks in and stairs at my dad and walks up and puts his arm around him and looks at the newer bar tender who apparently had never served this guy. He slaps his hand down on the bar and yells "WHISKEY!" as he nods to my Dad. The bar tender asks politely..."What kind". The drunk looks at the bar tender with disgust, takes a deep sigh and yells,"ALL...kinds!".
And that was father's introduction to one of the great drunks of Wabash, Indiana.
I used to dring a lot of Makers Mark and Woodford Reserve. One year a friend gave me a bottle of Glenmorangie(sp) and it set for a couple years. I was out of sipping stock and started in on the scotch. Hated it but drank it very dilute. By the end of the bottle I was only adding a little ice and enjoying it. It ruined me for drinking any other whisky, bourban no longer tastes good. It was a sad day for the distillers in Kentucky.
I've always preferred Irish and I'm not a whiskey drinker for the most part. Coming from Scottish heritage I should drink Scotch like my brother. My buddy Dan drinks really good Scotch and I have to admit it's something that I reckon I'll eventually start doing my damnself once I get around to it.
You want bad bourban try Old Crow. Not bad for cooking but that's about all. I'm a Jack Daniels fan. Saw a T shirt down at the distillery said "you may know Jack but I know Jimmy" At the time Jimmy Bedford was the master distiller at JD. I got invited to join the Tennessee Squire's so now I own an undivided interest in the land above distillery. Why don't we all get together and order a barrel?
JD is the next best to single malt wiskey.IMHO.My wife and I are invited to dinner tommorow night and I can taste some single malt already. The restarant only has GlenFiddich but for free,no complaints
My drinkers are Black label and Crown. They're hard to beat. But my favorites are 12 year old MaCallan sherry cask and Maker's Mark. I do like DoubleWood and Lagavullin goes nice with a good cigar.
