hi guys, havent been able to get in touch with our farmer contact in north dakota so im looking for a place to stay in the medina, wing, robinson area. looking at october 27 for 6 nights. do you any suggestions on motels, house rentals? thanks alot, mark

I am heading up to my place in ND friday just to get away for the weekend, and maybe catch a mess of walleyes. The area you mention is pretty broad. I have a couple of friends with hunt houses in Tuttle, which is a few miles west of Robinson. I will ask for info. I dont know of any motels between Wing and Robinson. My place is further north up near Harvey. Two decent motels in Harvey, that cater to a lot of hunters in the fall. R&R motel is where a lot of guys I know stay My wife and I used to say there before we got our own place. Low key but clean, best breakfast resturant in town is right next door. Rich

rich, thanks for the reply. we ended up getting a place in dawson. a little south of where we plan to hunt but still in a good area. i tried getting into harvey but couldnt find a place. nice area! enjoy your stay. best, mark

Dawson is a great place. Been doing a lot of can and redhead hunting in that area the last few years into Nov. Thats right i live in ND and still drive 50 miles each way to hunt good divers are addicting. And have always upland hunted around there. Send me a pm and can give you some info.

Dawson, has an incredible duck hunting history. There is a book called "Hunting Dakota 1890 to to 1920" I think I got the years right. This book is a collection of hunting chronicles from the predecessor of Field and Stream. It centers around a group of hunters who travel to North Dakota by train each year from Chicago in their own rail car. They side track it where ever they hunt. there are many stories about Dawson, in particular a local colorful character named "Gokey." A few years ago we took a day off from duck hunting and traveled south on rt 3 to Venturia to Phesant hunt with a buddy who lives down there. After a memorable hunt, as we were driving north we pulled over just south of Dawson where rt 3 crosses the big lake. It was just before sundown, there was an endless mass of birds flying from east to west out towards the lake and the sunset. This was a sight to behold. we pulled over for what seemed like a half hour to watch, I will never forget the sight. By the way, there is a cafe in Robinson, Carol the owner cooks up a mean breakfast. Rich

Excellent read, It was a outdoor writer from Michigan, Mershon and he would come out with their own private train car "City of Saginaw" and park it in Dawson. Many other good stories in that book from that area.

Harold is something else. I told Mark on the phone Harold first job for USFW was identifying lands to buy for the WPA program in my area. In the winter if he dug through snow and ice and found bulrush and sago he recommended to buy it. I always wondered why so many WPA were great Can spots, gotta love those diver hunters.

North Dakota is growing. There is a brand new, not quite finished Cobblestone Inn in Harvey Nd. A new one in Carrington also. This should just about double the rooms available in these towns. I can't quite imagine a bunch of gas grills in the parking lot and a big duck cleaning station at Cobblestone yet. The old mom and pop motels up there offer these hunter friendly conveniences as a matter of tradition during duck season. the weather was awesome this weekend, Walleyes didnt cooperate as planned, but I lost count of the northerns after two dozen or so, that was just saturday. Did manage a couple of nice walleyes. I grew up in a fishing family. My dad was a charter boat mate in the fifties. I commercil fished for the first fifteen years of my working life. I have eaten just about everything that swims or lives in the mud on the bottom, but I just have to say I cant think of anything better tasting than fresh caught walleye. Rich
