If anyone has any ideas so I can handle this myself without going to a vet. I have a 2 year old Boykin Spaniel (Bruno) great dog, great hunter. 4 weeks ago during training he got fleas, and started to itch and scratch until his hair was coming out, even after the fleas where gone. Itching stopped 1 week ago, started his training again in the field, he has no fleas but started scratching again until his hair comes out. Any ideas, I feel bad for the dog. I gave him a benydrl and it works, but don't know how healthy it is for Bruno. John

Give the dog a bath with dog shampoo.Make sure he gets a Heart pill every month, and get Bio-spot from a dog supply like lion Country, and use it every month, except maybe Dec,Jan,Feb.

How does his skin look? Is it red and splotchy? My dog has allergies and reacts like that. Then the hives pop and he gets staf infections and needs an antibiotic to get them under control. Are you sure the fleas are gone? A trip to the vet might be in order if this doesn't get better in the near future.

Pete's right... I would bet that the fleas came back.

The only thing that works consistently well with us is a bath a day... you'll see the fleas come right out in the soap.

And, vacuum where the dog hangs out and wash his/her bedding - the eggs keep hatching.

Good luck, we're going through the same thing with our two... who caught them from the neighborhood dog who we watched for a weekend ; (

As was mentioned, it is a good bet that the dog has an infection as a result of all the scratching it did. That is a pretty common occurance . Have the vet check it out. You may need to put it on cephalexin for 10 days or so to clear it up.

Also as mentioned, the fleas may be back. Either from its original source or a re- infestation from eggs that hatched after the first batch. If you get fleas you really need to clean out the dog's rest area and places it lays around. Make sure to wash any and ALL clothes, rugs, dog beds , etc. in hot water. In really bad cases you may have to fog the area.

Be on the alert for tape worms in the future too as I believe fleas are part of the TW life cycle. It will look like small segments of spagheti in their stool.

good luck

Okay, gave the dog a bath, no fleas(poor guy still scratching) going to the vet in the morning. No fleas in the bedding area. I'll let u know what happens. I'l keep an eye for the tape worms. Appreciate the help...John

Took the dog to the vet today, he got 1- cortisone shot, 1 bottle of predinsone, (take for 5 days) and a bottle of Gentraspray/topical spray for the itch, 2 times a day. Give him a bath once a week in an oatmeal shampoo. This dog has it made. $170.00 for twenty minutes at the vet..PRICELESS, thanks guys....John
