I am in the painting stages of finishing a red head for a friend. I have never done one before. I am stumped on what the right color is for the head. I have the body finished but all the paint combos I have been mixing for the head keep coming out to purple. Any help I would be grateful for.

Riley, sorry I can't help with you redhead paint question.

One quick question about painting for you, if you don't mind. Who did the painting of your avatar? If it has a name, what is the name of the painting?

Thanks.

I used chestnut from LSB when I painted my cans & redheads.
I thought it was great for cans but not quite red enough for the redheads.

So I am in the same situation on the redhead foamers I am making for this Fall.

I'm no expert, but I start with Ronan American Vermilion, some burnt umber, and mess with it til I like what it looks like DRY. From wet to dry is always a surprise for me, and still is. I do find with this paint mixture, the RED doesn't rub off, like tube oils do, when I grab the decoys, and toss them all together in a basket, or bottom of the boat. I'm sure you will get many really good answers to your question.

Looks like a Bob White to me.

Riley,
Burnt Sienna and you can highlight the cheek & brow with some yellow/ochre to brighten those areas.
