OK guys, I need some information... Blake said that dad had a paper that he carried with them when they went hunting. He said it stated Blake was of age to hunt etc.

We are pretty sure this paper is in dads wallet but before I ask mom for it, would it be something I could have replaced so we dont have to open that door...

Is this paper going to be a necessity for whomever takes Blake hunting this year?

I also wondered, If I venture out with Blake to hunt do I need a license as does he?

As you can tell Im a total novice to this sport, and Im sure Blake has the knowledge of what Im asking you all for. I just want to make sure were totally set. And that he is set for hunting whenever and with whomever we get the opportunity with.

Thanks for any and all info guys!

Hi Bridget,

In most states that would be a Hunters Education or Hunters Safety certificate. Not sure if Michigan requires more than that. I'll do some checking when I get back home but in the mean time, you could call your local Warden, Hunters Safety instructor, etc. to find out. As you can imagine, every state has a bit different rules to start youngsters off hunting. Ask Blake if he has taken a Hunters Safety course, I bet he has.

Best,

Boy, I thought I knew a bit about michigan's laws, looked up the web site and got confused...

Yes, we have hunter safety classes, it could be proof of that, or maybe something to the fact that your dad was designated to accompany Blake afield...see here:

From what I am finding, I think Blake needs a Junior Small game license ($1, ages 10-16) after he turns 16(under current laws), he will need a regular small game license (currently $15) as well as a Michigan Waterfowl license($5) and a federal waterfowl stamp($15). Be sure to ask for a HIP indorsement, it costs nothing, but you have to answer a couple of questions regarding last years harvest...and Blake can proudly tell the clerk of his harvest.

Anybody feel free to correct me if I am wrong, confused, or reading outdated information from the DNR website.

Bridget,
I would assume that it was Blakes hunters safety certificate. Here is how to go about getting him a new one from the state.

In addition if Blake has his old license then he can take that to a license agent ( place that sells licenses) and use it as proof and buy this years license. Either a hunters safty card or a license is normally used. If you go this route I would go to a ma and pop sporting goods store to buy the license they are more likely to understand what needs to be done.

The best solution would be to get his hunter safety card though.
