New England--Fall Apocalypse

Anyone else in New England (or parts south) hit hard by last night's storm?

It didn't seem like much more than a big bucket of rain and wind until about 5 this morning, when the wind outside got loud enough to wake me up. A few minutes later our power went out.

By 8 am it was clear that there was widespread damage in Maine. News reports are suggesting that something like half the customers in Maine are without power, and that it will be "at least days" before most of us have it back.

I'm not sure what caused so much damage. Looking at offshore buoys and onshore wind gages, it looks like winds topped out around 50 knots/60 mph (with 130 mph up on Mt. Washington), and the peak winds didn't last long. But the damage to trees is widespread, and our powerlines took a beating.

We've got no generator and are on well water, so existence is pretty basic for the next few days. I'm just hoping the power comes back on in time to save a freezer full of veggies from the garden, 40 pounds of blueberries, and about 60 pounds of beef and pork I just picked up from my butcher. If not, huge barbecue at my place about Thursday--on paper plates, because we can't do dishes. LOL!

Fortunately the YMCA is just down the street, and I just updated our membership so Dee Dee can use the elliptical machines. At least we can get showers.

We got thumped on Long Island, high wind ,lot of branches down, leaves still on so thats why. Tide was 3' above normal, but kept the electric. If your stuff was frozen you'll be good to the weekend, at least, if a chest freezer, just keep it closed.
Went 2 weeks without electric on one hurricane, What don't kill you makes you stronger, lol

I heard on the news y'all got thumped, sounds worse that Nate was for us.
Hang in there, don't think I will make the BBQ.....

Get a pressure canner and start canning all that vegetables and meat that you have in the freezer. I've got an extra generator if you want to borrow it.

Sorry to hear about your plite.

Wasn’t too bad here. Lots of downed trees lost power for a 1/2 day. Took the old jeeper around town and had to some off roading to make it anywhere.

Didn’t find and shrooms but we should get another flush this week with all the rain and colder temps.

I would have loved to have hunted that storm. I have a hurricane spot that brings in all the birds on the lower river....

Hope you get your power back soon Jeff. I hate not having power for days and days and days....don't wanna imagine it up north where it just might get really cold too

Holy Smokes, we got pounded here in Vt. I was woke up at 3am by the Poke Boat being slammed against the house. It makes a very distinctive drum like sound...

Yesterday it was reported that there were almost 50,000 customers without power, this morning its down to 36,000 or so.

Huge trees down everywhere. Guys as work were showing pics on their phones of crushed cars and crunched houses. Luckily I avoided all of that.

Hope you get power back soon Jeff. If it makes you feel any better my wife and I closed on a camp in Maine, 10 AM Monday morning. In the dark. [shocked] We thought we were pretty slick beating the storm Sunday, then the power went out at our motel Monday at 4 AM. [frown] The camp has a generator, so not too bad. Now we are heading back to CT because both our house and my parents house are on generators. One more reason not to let those people from "away" into ME, always bringing something bad with them. [cool]

Camp in Maine--now that is interesting. Whereabouts? If you are up in the summer, we could chase some brook trout.

Hope things go well down in the Nutmeg state.

Meanwhile my wife just sent an excited message. The Central Maine Power outage report online says that 2 of 24 customers on our street have been restored. I'm hoping that means they are working their way up the hill to me, and power will be on when I get home. But probably not.

Fair amount power still out here if the generators running is an indication... Been hearing them at home and out hunting in the next town over. Had to detour on my way out to get hunting on Monday (got lectured by the PoPo for violating the sanctity of the police cones blocking the road - oops).

Get a generator for that freezer and well pump! Great thing to have.

Moosehead just north of Greenville, near Moose Brook. Family still has the camp on South Twin, we like it there too. Power came on in CT, no power in ME until at least Saturday. Hope you get power soon, and good idea for a spring trip!

We were lucky here in the dacks, very little damage or outages despite the high winds, same max winds on Whiteface 125mph . Friend on lake Ontario said the waves were peaking at 27 ft

Still no power here and the Duckwater took a tree off the bow. I love wooden boats but pretty happy the Duckwater is welded aluminum!
