hey guys im new to carving and am looking for some one to point me in the right direction. as in what kind of wood do i need, tools, beggining patterns? many thanks Dan

Best thing would be to find someone close that carves and could be a mentor.Patterns can be gotten off the mighty layout boys site for free if you have a printer. Bob Furia, one of the best carvers in the midwest also has a "how to" there. I like to use 2 and better premium western spruce 2x material but Basswood makes great heads, Northern White Cedar is preferable to about anything for heads and bodies. You will need a bandsaw, a few good rasps, a good carving knife, some kind of drill for the eye holes and paintbrushes.

Dan,

Take a look at Willy and Diane McDonald's Duck Blind website as well. Pops has great tutorials and can provide a starter kit for you as well. Don't hesitate to call him with questions.

Thanks for the plug, Lee.

Hey Dan,

I'm just down the road (interstate 80) bout 11/2 hours.

No where near Bob's caliber, but I can make a piece of wood resemble a duck.
