New tool that really HOGS out the wood.

I'd been eye-ballin a couple things in the Wood Carver's Supply catalog for a while and finally decided to give it a try.

First up is this big ugly aggressive carving burr. Originally bought to make some bowls and really big ladles but immediately saw it's potential for decoys.

I've got it set up in a die grinder and it absolutely melts through cedar and pine. I haven't hollowed a decoy with it yet but I will soon. I plan to do my normal drill press hollowing and follow with this to get into the hard to reach spots, but I do believe it would hollow almost as fast using just this. Definitely want to make sure you are holding onto the grinder with both hands and have all applicable protective equipment on as this guy is almost as big as a Skoal can. This baby throws a rooster tail of sawdust!

I also decided to try one of their "Mastercarver" brand gouges. Never been a fan of Chinese steel but I was pretty pleased with this one considering it was only $20 for a 40mm wide gouge. Certainly not much to look at but the steel is good on it. while they (like everyone) claim it to be razor sharp out of the box it took some touching up to get it as sharp as I'd like but then again it seem even the high dollar stuff needs it too. I certainly don't plan to quit using my swiss made tools but for the ones I don't use very often, I think these fit the bill pretty nice.

Anyhow just wanted to share my experiences with these new tools.

I have a similar looking Kutzall bit that I got off of ebay. I use it for hollowing the bigger birds. It works great. It takes off wood like you think it should. Much, much faster than my 3/4" ball bit.

that things looks like a trip to the hand surgeon to me...and I need my hands

Don't be afraid Kevin, I know not one but two one handed beauticians who do just fine.

I looked at that bit and was thinking about getting one. Good to hear you like it.

I decided last winter to start a few swans and immediately saw the need to remove large amounts of wood quickly. I looked at this wheel that attaches to an angle grinder. Needless to say it really removes the wood quickly, but you want to take your time and be careful.

Big or small Saburr Tooth makes some really nice bits.

interesting

Hey man! Don't mess with the Zohan!

He makes me feel silky smoothy!

I don't know what happened there.

I swear I typed:

"No Worries Kevin, Lem was able to cut hair and carve decoys with one good hand"

Weird

Seriously Kevin, I know what you mean. The picture shows it in a flex shaft hand piece. I don't think I would use it in one for a couple reasons. One, it scares the hell out of me, two I don't think you would have enough control with one hand nor the power to make it work like it should, and third I think you would end up breaking a lot of shafts. I have it in a big die grinder and hold on with both hands with my work in a vise.

Brian, I can assure you that baby will hog off as much wood as you want to but I would definitely make sure you had the guard on the grinder!

After messing around with it a bit more I'm surprised how nice the finish is considering how rough the tool is.

That cutter is a Saburrtooth cutter and we also carry them. One word of caution is that they can really tear up a shaft on a Flexable shaft machine quickly if you try to hog with a lot of pressure. Make sure your machine is designed to handle a cutter of that size.

Willy,

I'm curious. Do you ever plan to actually contribute anything to this page or do you just come here to sell stuff?

Paul, I read what Willy said and see a note of "CAUTION" for those using one of those cutters......don't you?

A visit to the ER would be in order if I tried to use one of those. I have too many mishaps with the smaller ones.
