First of all, Happy Hew Year to all the folks on Duckboats. May this New Year be the start of many hours of time spent enjoying (and creating) all the "ropes and the tools" connected to our wonderful pastime - be it boats, decoys, calls, flatwork, whatever...... and here's hoping that we be granted the opportunities and well-being to enjoy it all through the coming year. Good luck and favorable weather to all those who still have some of this season left!

To kick-off the New Year, here's a pair of my favorite species, one that is always a bonus bird in the bag out here in Ohio, the American blackduck:

Cork w/ spatter painted heads.

Happy New Years, Bob. I sure love those black ducks. It is good to see the artist at work!

Bob,
Those are just great decoys. Absolutely love them. I am down in your great state right now and if all goes well Ill be shooting a black duck and a few green heads tomorrow.

Roy: Is the knife with the lanyard loop an old scout knife? My dad gave me his from the 1930's and it looks just looked it. It's a great knife that I still use to this day.

I got this one from my dad to. Its says U.S.A on a metal plaque on the other side. I couldnt make out what it says on the blade though. It comes in handy.

First I splatter painted the teal head in blood. Next I snapped off his bill. When (if) I finish this one it will have a story before it even hunts one time.
Bob...if tomorrow I could carve like that then today would have been my last day as an insurance agent.

Bob, would you be willing to post a additional tail-on photo of the low head bird? I would appreciate seeing how you pulled off the layout of the wings to expose more of the primaries and the speculum on that bird's right wing. I didn't notice that when they were in Gesso. Thanks!

Ron, my father in law was a carver that used only knives to carve. Let him use my foredom for a weeks. Loved it, but cost him two chamois shirts. Leather apron works well, knuckles heal. Nice carving.
