News from Hoefgen Canoes (Hoefgen Duck Boat)

As many of you know, I have owned a Hoefgen Duckboat for some time as have others on this site. It has served me well over the years and I have been extremely happy with the boat.

Some may know that the building of the Hoefgen brand boats slowed a few years back due to retirements or folks just moving on I believe (could be wrong on this one but I think this is the reason). Boats were still made but in smaller quantities and on an order basis only.

Imagine how surprised I was to get a letter in the mail this past week from Hoefgen Canoes. It was a personal letter from Paul Hoefgen letting me know he enjoyed reading my story (on duckboats.net) about the day I purchased the Hoefgen from him in Green Bay and getting pulled over by a cop who only wanted to know where I got the boat from. That post had to be from many years ago. Funny that he found that one of all the posts about his boats on duckboats.net.

In the note Paul let me know that Hoefgen is now back in the business of making boats. He currently has 4 fiberglass duck boats and 1 Kevlar duck boat in stock. I thought I would pass this information along as many here may have an interest in knowing Hoefgen is back to building boats.

For those interested, here is the website to the Hoefgen Duck Boat (and no, I get nothing out of this, just a very happy customer).

Hmmm... A bit long for my needs (jump shooting in creeks), but the weight of it definately makes it cartoppable. I may have gone with this one a few years ago over my Aquapod due to cost considerations. Too late now :) and I love my 'pod :)

I have a boat in my backyard that needs some work now, but it was made in the mid 1940s and looks almost identical to that boat, glass over cedar, that is a very nice design for a duck boat, before the one I had needed more work I would use it all the time in some local rivers and it was the best thing I have had for that small water. good luck with these boats, that design really works and is very stable. much better than the current kayak I use now in the small water.

Nice looking boat. Especially in kevlar, but even in the glass layout, a lighter alternative to my plastic Old Town kayak, and I suspect that it would paddle better, too.

The only change I'd make is to get rid of the keel, but I realize this is a feature many folks desire. (I just can't understand why ;) )

Nice looking boat...maybe I should send the link to the wife and drop a big hint...isn't fathers day coming up??? Or maybe the birthday comes early..

I have always wanted one to replace the canoe for hunting. Last I knew he wasn't shipping, they were a "pick up only" which makes getting one out here on the east coast fairly impossible other than by driving out there to pick it up in person. And as I get older, the 40# Kevlar wt sounds even more attractive.

Sure wish a North East retailer picked the line up.

Bill,

Line up a couple of more boats/guys and you might have a deal. Then again at 45 lbs can't it be shipped UPS? :^)

I 'd be happy with the fiberglass model. In all seriousness I usually do get back to WI a couple times a year, this year it may only be on my way through to and from ND though.

Guys, Westlake is right around the corner. There are guys that live close by that could assist getting it that far possibly. This year I won't be able to make it, but I plan to the next. I go up there several times a year.

Just a thought.
