I like your new sailboat, heck, with a bit of Mojo grass camo, catails and some mud on it, it would make a heck of a duck boat as well.
SWEET!

I like that mini-magnum of shame-pain.....classy dude!

Grand christening, the proper way.

Now tells us about the boat, who made it and what size horse power sail is on it? Yo-Ho-Ho and a bottle of sparklin' apple juice!

Send it up here to Wis Joe and we will break it in properly. I got some left over Kaki paint you can have for nothing. Throw a little sand on top of that and you have a non skid deck. Yes Sir,a real proper duck boat. Take all the weather you can throw at it. Hee hee

That looks similar to the Mellon seed class ?

Yeah Pete, don't need paint, just a fitted grey cover to the waterline. She is a Melonseed.A fiberglass replica of an 1880's
duck boat with sprit rig 62sq ft sail and centerboard.Gota go.Lunch ,then to the lake.Wind is showing 8mph on Weather bug.

Eric, mine has a Tanbark sail, same as the one in the pic.The majority of the 400 boats that Roger Craford has built,
have tanbark sails.I also like a fax linen (cream) sail on a green hull.I wouldn't sail with the flag flying from anyplace but the peak of the sail.Although it has become acceptable in the past few decades ,the ensign is flown at the peak of a quadriangle sail ,when underway and 2/3 up the leach on a triagular sail ((jib headed).I'm old enough to stick to traditions.
Lee,your right, she is something to behold, and I take the cover off almost every day with some excuse to fix or rearange something, just so I can look at her lines.Like a beautiful lady, don't you know.Info www.melonseed.com

I just found my next boat to build. I've been thinking about a dory for a while now and that 15' gunning dory is just what I want - the lines are sooooo sweet. Now to find a copy of John Gardner's book and start the research.

Pete

Joe- last week i talked to Roger about making a gunning mellon seed- duck boat drap paint/gelcoat- painted bight work and painted mast and spars-

i am hoping to get it ordered for next season- I use to have one of his 16 foot sailing dorys- in a week moment i sold it-

that boat you have is truly a lovely thing!!!

Donald

Pete,I take it that you checked out Roger's site.Did you read the voyage of the fellow that borrower Roger's 15' Dory and rowed from Maine to Nova Scotia.
A very nice Boat.
Donald,I can't believe you sold one of thoes Dorys that Roger builds.I contacted Roger in January and asked if anyone had comissioned him to build a
Melonseed that would be used for duck hunting ,and the answer was NO.I feel that the reasons this boat fell out of favor among hunters is the difficulty and cost of construction, and when outboard power became available, the underslung stern (45deg) didnt lend itself to hanging one on effectively. You may have seen a previous pic I posted with my new 12ga DE Haan SxS.I sent the pic to Roger, but received no comment. Here is what I would do to make the Melonseed a dual purpose boat.Take a Yacht finished
melonseed, and when needed for hunting, remove the sail rig and rudder, have a dark grey/camo poly cotton or cordura fitted cover made that would come down to the waterline, cover the deck and have a sprayshield/blind sewn on.Now you have a suitable rowing duck boat that converts back and forth in minutes. You could make a decoy rack that would go over the cover and/or use decoy bags bungeed on the stern deck.Roger installs eye straps about 8" forward of the stern on each quater. He would probably install another pair about a foot further forward.I wouldn't use the sail when hunting as it would be stored in the cockpit. It's too nice for that.Letme know how your negotiations go.
Another fine builder of wooden Melonseeds is <www.brushcreekyachts.com>,Marvin Spencer in Plymouth NC.Nice site with Video. He can meet any modification,I'm Sure.

thanks- -- i sold the dory some 10 yrs ago- -- Roger was a little - well not happy i wanted a gunning seed- but its a true gunning classic that needs to be used for what it was made for- i think your idea is great!!

I will send pics later this summer- fall as the boat deal gets done-

i will only row or sail mine- i had an 1836 design BBSB sailing rig- sold it - it was just to tight under the deck for my size 10 feet- rowed like a feather- but it was to small-

Love the idea of using old designs in this modern world-

if it aint broke- dont fix it- my old man use to say-

And i have had more than one outboard break down- never had a issue rowing-

all the best- DLHO

JoeO: congradulations on the beautfull melonseed can't wait to see pic,s of you on the marsh with it.let's see some pic's of you sailing it heelover in a nice wind. Best,Bill

No marsh,Bill, but someday may use her for a sneak on divers.I would love to get a few pics of me sailing in a 15kt breeze, but the wind so far hasn't
cooperated, and my camera only has a 10sec delay.I need a photo assistant.I have been out four times in light to calm conditions. What few times the wind got up to say 6kts,
it was a thrill and the boat sailed like a much bigger boat, except accelerated quickly.Tommorow through Sunday,I'll try to get out a couple times.I have logged enough hours of practice in light air with the sun burning down at 90 + degrees.
