NJ sea duck info?

Hello, Are there any NJ sea duck hunters out there that can give me some insight? I've been hunting the salt for divers in the LBI area for a couple years now and want to try out front for some sea ducks. Any suggestions on where to put in/hunt? I have a 16' deep V aluminum w/ a 50hp but would still be happy to avoid running the inlet at Barnegat light. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance! I'm new to the sight but you all seem to have the same passions I have.

The only way out of LBI near the light is threw old Barny and I would not advise it in that boat. Your best bet would be to go to the old fish factory on great bay. plenty of sea duck there and much safer for a 16 ft v.

Barnegat is one or if not the most dangerous inlet on the east coast. There has been 30 to 40 ft. vassals gone down there. in fact right out side the inlet lays a verry large tug.

great bay is filled with sea ducks in the bay and inlet. That would be my choice. especially if you are not familiar with Barnegat inlet. November and on is the best time.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input! I hunt the area behind LBI with my 14' TDB and am rigging the 16' for more open water (such as they great bay area). I was hoping to take advantage of the early sea duck season, but it sounds like the season may be open but no birds!

I assume the fish processing plant you mention is what I've heard locally as "The Stink house"? If you hunt that area I hope to see you some day.

Delawar Bay is best for early sea ducks. mostly scoters.

Yep! I will be at the house chasing the squaws there in the scull.

I hope to see you out there. I love hunting the edge of the bay (especially when the bluebills are in!) but I can only shoot so many buffys before I feel guilty and need to do something else. I only get to see a few squaws when the weather turns REALLY nasty back where I hunt. And I haven't been able to connect with one yet. I'm always ready for a new adventure, so one more thing to look forward to this season!

Try the Raritan Bay. I have hunted there for over 15 years and it is full of sea duck. Your boat can handle it too. Only 1 mile form the keyport launch and your knee deep in old squaw, bluebills, bufflehead, and blacks.

Thanks guys! It sounds like I need to go visit my in-laws in Manahawkin and do some summer scouting / flounder fishing while the weather is nice.

Andrew,
Raritan bay is a little out of my normal driving distance (my NJ hunting is based out of Manahawkin) but with a review like that I may have to take a day and give it a try. Thanks for the info!

If interested, I hunt the raritan during the coastal season everyday. I can show you a thing or two about the area. I also have a honey hole for black ducks . Early season: teal, brant, blacks, and mallards, later old squaw, bufflehead, bluebills, ringnecks, murkies, canvasback, canandians, scoters, brant, blacks etc.. I have shot my limit of ducks every day during the coastal season for the last 5 years, at bufflehead creek. (my friends and I named it) I know it's a hike from Manahawkin, but I live in Toms River and like it better than the Barnegat.. Take it for what it's worth... Experience means everything.

Andrew, I was looking at the proposed seasons and I'm hoping to take a few days off in the early season. I may take you up on your offer. That's a lot more variety than I've been seeing in Barnegat. I'll let you know closer to the time or if I get that way on a scouting trip. Thanks again!
