North Dakota summer ducks

I flew up to North Dakota Friday afternoon for a couple of days of fishing. Saturday I fished my own spot, Clear Lake just west of Harvey N D. It took me two hours to get my limit. That evening John VanHouten and his wife invited me over to their place for dinner. John told me about his Thursday fishing trip to Antelope Lake which is a few miles north of my little honey hole. We agreed to meet at nine and we would go in his boat. I was happy with this deal as I had never fished this lake. In spite of a very cool, windy and gloomy morning, we launched the boat, went a short distance, threw our lines out, and within a minute or so I had a fish. Beginners luck? or whatever, I unhooked it and threw my line back in. A few minutes later I had another one, Then John, then me again. Well we limited out within the first half hour or so. The rest of the morning,{ two hours or about} we scouted around looking for other spots. All in all we probably released another 35 to 40 walleyes before we quit. I had the greatest time! Johns Boykin Bruno had a blast too, I am sure John had just as much fun. Much like a good duck hunt, this was the kind of fishing trip memories are made of! By the way Saturdays Dinner was great too. Duck boats don't have to be put in moth balls when the season is over! Rich

Nice Rich, you gave up the secret lure...it's okay Scheels is sold out....lots of laugh and great trip..Eatting fillets in minutes..

Oh, I almost forgot the ducks, I took this picture out of my truck window on the way to meet John. These were mostly Geese and mallards. John and I were saying, that this year is going to be the "Year of the Pintail", I have never seen so many as I had on this trip. Rich

Rich, I got a date with those birds at Rugby in October, hope they don't leave early!! Great walleye pics, had a day almost as good last month on an undisclosed lake on the Minn./ S.D. border. Duck boats can keep you out of trouble all year.

Come on Tom, you can tell me. I didn't know you fished.

Let's see maybe I'll trade locations. How about that opening day golden pond?? huh?? Seriously, my brother took me to a spot that I didn't have time to keep two lines in the water quite a bit south of where we welcome the duck season. My fishing has been shameful and this year for some reason is shaping up not much better, oh well life does go on. I guess I have been shooting too much if that is possible.

I hunt about fifty miles west of you for waterfowl, cranes and pheasant out there. Are all the potholes full to the standing vegetation edge this year? Hopefully no major mudflats to work across to open water (badly damaged knee).

RL, To quote from the Rhyme of the ancient Mariner," water, water everywhere" etc. No guarantee it will be the same in October.I have never had a bad year up there in the last ten years. Rich

Rich,
You sure have me drooling when I looked at that picture of the North Dakota pothole loaded with ducks and geese. Not only that I saw two things that are really rare down here. That would be water and the color "green".

I'll bet that fish fry was great!

Ah but it is Brian, at least part of it's heritage is Chessie. A friend has one and I can see the chessie in him when I look into his eyes, his demeanor around people, etc. When I'm ready for another dog it will be a Boykin.

I have been around chessies all my life, have owned 20 or so, presently have three at home. As much as we love this breed, my wife says now that we are closer to 70 than 60 our next dog is going to be a little smaller. She is thinking Boykin or AWS for the future. RICH
