Northern Michigan Hunt

First off I would just like to say that this is a great site. This is my first time posting anything and I hope that I can get some suggestions.

My friend and I are going to the UP. His uncle is from up that way but doesnt get to hunt much anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions for areas or types of ducks to set up for. I am from baltimore ,Md. I figure it will be mostly divers but I know its been warm. We have a 20' Crestliner and a 12' runabout that we are bringing. Were headed up the first week of November to Suix St. Marie (sorry bout spelling). Any help is apprectiate.

Good luck this season and "Try Em"

Ok, My name is Charles McDaniel. I am the 4th. I am 27 years old and live in Bel Air, Md. My dad has had me in the goose pit since I was 2. I have been hunting the eastern shore and local places around the house. I made my own sea duck rig and take real pride in hunting over something of my own creation. I am a manager at Dicks Sporting Goods and have worked for them about 7 years. I love the outdoors. I hunt fish and crab. My grandfather was a commercial waterman. I grew up on the work boat and love the water.

I think that covers all about me. I didnt mean to be rude. I really wasnt sure what I am expected to so I hope this is what you were asking for.

Charles, I can't say that you will get help for this trip, but stick around and become a participant. Once you are a known entity and contribute, the sky is the limit as far as help from what I've seen.

Good to see that you are broadening your experiance - there is a great world out there full of tastey stuff to chase!

Charles,
As far as I know I am the only person on the board in the UP.I just received a first hand report from the east side of the UP and its that no fresh birds are down and the ones around are stale. Probably not the info you were looking for but its what I have to offer. I planned to hunt this morning but the warm bed didn't let go so I cant say if the storm brought any new birds in. My guess is no because it was all south wind.

Charles,
Welcome, I know there are one or two regulars from lower Michigan that make a semi annual trip to the UP, hopefully they will see this and respond to this (or by PM if they don't want to post it for the whole world)

Brandon,
I wish my bed hadn't let go...I thought conditions were favorable, wind shifted W-NW over night and temperatures dropped. Light rain with occaisional sleet, but dang, I could count all the ducks I saw on my fingers...and some of those may have been the same ducks counted twice...

Thank You,

Brandon and Chuck for the welcome. Rich from up that way is helping me out a bit. I appreciate the responses and feedback. Good luck to you both this season and be safe!

I spent a week 10/9 - 10/17 duck hunting in my home town, Manistique, about the middle of the peninsula. Lots of divers, large rafts of divers on lake Michigan and the inland lakes. I hunted a few small inland lakes, and Big Bay De Noc on Lake Michigan. Did very well on the divers, lots of blebills and redheads. Puddlers were just moving into the area towards the end of the week. Since your in the Sault Saint Marie area you can hunt lake Michigan, Huron or Superior. I used to hunt around Drummond Island back in the 70's. Havent hunted that area since.

Howdy Charles here are my two cents.

East end/ Munuskong Bay. The Kong can be a little tricky if you're not acquainted with her though. Drummond Island, Takes a ferry ride across at Detour Mich. North side out of Yacht Haven Area. For quicky hunts look at Wreck Island, Grape Island, Pigeon Cove, or in and around Harbor Island ( This area hunts a lot like the Kent Narrows). There is also and area known as lakes one, two, and three. (lots of guys hit these spots though).

West end, look to Lake Au Train just S.E. of Marquette. Two miles island from Superior. If the blow is on you can shoot Squaws, scoters, green wings and red heads all in the same hunt. Launch is on the East end of the lake. There are accommodations with some very nice people right on the lake itself.

Good luck, Have fun, but above all be safe if you hit the big lakes.
