On the big saltwater today

down on MS Sound today chasing redheads and scaup, maybe a scoter if I am lucky.
Almost didn?t go, pulled out of the dock into the roughest seas I?ve navigated in a while. Took a lot of saltwater in the face before getting into the lee of the peninsula I?m hunting. Nice and calm next to the bank
More to come later.

Carl,
It's 26 degrees and still dark here in Northern Minnesota. Sunrise not until 7:52 this morning and crappies will start biting around 9:00am. Ten inches of ice drilling to get to the water, makes for very little wave action even with the 14 mile per hour predicted winds for later today. I picked up my limit of crappies plus a bonus Northern Pike yesterday. I hope you are successful in your venture today, good luck and stay safe.

Carl, I enjoy these threads as I love to follow along vicariously almost as much as actually being there! Good luck with the "white" birds. Or "bottom feeders" as my friend used to say.

I LOVE hunting big water. While divers get my first nod, I'll enjoy a good Mallard hunt too, as long as I'm on the big water.

My last hunt. We dont usually see too many of these, so this was a trophy bird for me.

I'm stuck at home today, probably won't be a big deal as forecast is 50? and rain. Birds typically aren't very active, save for the first flight fury, and I hate to hunt in both.

I picked up a power trim and tilt for my outboard to save my back, started the relatively easy install last night, but ran into an installation hardware issue, so I'll run to the old fashioned hardware store uptown and pick up what I need, then finish the install.

Dave, I'm looking forward to some hard water. I'm not typically a very successful ice fisherman, but I have all the toys, and really enjoy walking on the water, and just being out there. Good luck to you too!

Nice work Carl. I had to work today ( crappy tide too) I will hunt new area starting next Saturday for the rest of the season. All big salt. Can't wait to put Chris Finch's bird to work.

Never got my redheads, saw a 2 flocks at a distance but none came into my area. Oh well still a great day.

Nice, I havent caught a crappie through the ice since 1986.
10" of ice is a nice depth, enough not to worry about safety and not too much if you have a hand auger!

Nice GE!
I actually saw at least one GE today, and saw another 2 birds I am 90% sure were GEs, but didnt get a shot at any.

All greaters, nice big fat ones too.
I've only ever killed one or two lessers down on there.
We get mainly lessers on upper Mobile Bay & bays in the Mobile Delta, with a smattering of greaters on the eel grass beds..
