One of them days, part two

The tides turned, and as Jon Yenni pointed it could only go up this week.

Two days ago we saw hoards of buffleheads, bluebills, scoters, Ruddies, and a few cans. The stayed wide and went into a cove out on the great bay. We filled the morning with a few dippers and a hen bluebill, which was special to me. A while back I made a bunch of decoys, and we used these almost exclusively.

Today the trend continued. We pulled on our big boy pants and launched at daybreak due to the small craft flag flying high, for good reason. After a wet ride my half right homemades were deployed along with Bull, the traveling decoy on the "x".

The big ducks did not move, but the buffleheads, which are special to me despite the opinion of some that feel they are not worthy, cooperated beautifully. I can only remember once or twice in my life that I had constant action so fast and furious. Feet down and wings set, it was a spectacular show. We limited out on 12 Drake Buffies in a very short period of time as the bay became angry.

Compared to my first day-

I figured out a work around on the motor, so it only stalled ten times or so

I felt great this morning, for the fist time this week.

With the help of spring clamps and zip ties, the blind now only waves lie a flag, rather than flapping like a bird.

We loaded the boat without incident, bruises or broken bones.

Bull looks great in my spread, and I will be sad to part with him.

Today is one of those few days that makes it all worth it. I bet I saw fifty birds land in my hand carved decoys in two hours.

I have some tailgate shots, but can't get them up on my iPhone. Hopefully I can get them added later.

Good stuff. I love the sight of those big pink feet lower & wings cupped on drake buffies locked on the decoys. I'd been right there with yah.

Ya gotta love how those buffies save a hunt like that. I'd take limits on buffies versus no shooting all day. We've been down there and had that happen a number of times. Are you and Jon still down there hunting or heading home? Good luck to you guys and safe travels. How are the brant numbers this season?

Steve, Jon didn't make it this year. We head back Monday. Tomorrow afternoon I am taking the family for a short hunt on the bayside, still hoping to score on a Canvasback.
Here is a pick of our epic dipper shoot. If anyone knows Ryan Walker in Chincoteague, ask him sometime to tell the story of the Dipper Destroyer and the 80 yard watershot. It is worth the listen!

I took a nice Blackduck today that will go on the wall, the first East coast black duck for me. Used my NB Dweeter during the hunt too. Pic below. There is also an MLB Bob Furia custom call on that lanyard. Both did a great job calling ducks today.

There has been one group of Brant this year near the causeway. About 50 birds. Not really many compared to what I have seen.
