Opinions on Cameras

My wife and I are looking to buy a new camera. I want something with different lenses, especially a longer lense for taking pics while hunting. She wants it for pics of the baby due in March. We are both amatuers when in comes to photography, so it needs to be easy to use. I don't want a POS, but I'm not looking to take out a 2nd mortage either. Any suggestion?

Hi Kevin,

Just bought a Nikon d5100, 2 lenses, 15mm-55 and 55mm-300mm. Very new to all this, bought it to follow my daughter's sporting events and water fowling. I just posted some pictures under "ending with friends" post. Still have tons to learn but very happy so far. good luck

Kevin,

There are some great cameras out there. Set yourself a budget and go from there. There are nice cameras on both sides of the Canon / Nikon fence. It's just a matter of what side you want to be on.
I have shot both and from the sound of what your looking for, I would check out the Canon T2i or T3i. Affordable, but not cheap. Work on getting more lenses later. Which ever camera you get learn it then make a wise lense selection and buy the best lens you can swing for the budget you set.
It's just like duck boats.

Last year I purchased a canon rebel xs 10megapix, as a bundle deal. Bag, memory chip and a 18-55 lens for about 599$ from the local Wal Mart. Bought an aftermarket flash and 75-300 lens later. I bought them for sporting events that my children play in. I have been wanting to take to the blind but have been to afraid to as I would probably drop it in the water. A good pelican case would be a must as they are waterproof, I still need one of those. This is tough cause you have to weigh everything you want the camera do to with the cost. Good luck... A friend of mine who is apart of this forum will have an opinion on this topic the next time he logs in as photograph is a passion of his..

Kevin,

Wife and I were looking for the same things, she wanted small and convenient for pics of the grandkids, I wanted big and changeable for outdoor and hunting shots. We compromised and bought a Canon Power Shot SX10-IS Super Zoom. Single lens but 20X optical + 4X digital. It's a nice camera, Beautiful pictures, BUT, it's too big for convenience, I can't stop the action, and the manual focus is nonexistent. If I could have a do over I'd buy her the camera she wanted and start saving my money for that T3i.
Just my $.02

I just got a canon T2i this fall and really like it. Got a kit with2 lenses but the larger zoom lens isnt that good. Wish i would have saved my money and just got the camera with small lens and got a nicer zoom later. The bird pics I have been posting are with this camera and lens set up. you can see some of the pics at full zoom are not real crisp. I'm new to this also and assume that I will get a little better pic with a better lens. Good luck with whatever you choose. Luke

buy the best camera you can afford you can always upgrade the lense at a later date. I like Cannon takes a nice picture and the lenses are alittle cheaper than Nikon however I think the Nikon's do take better pictures in the right hands.

I am a professional photographer and shoot Canon SLR's. I think both Canon and Nikon make fantastic SLR cameras, but I rarely bring my expensive SLR with me hunting or fishing. To do so means I have to lug a waterproof pelican case along, plus the cameras are big and bulky.

Instead, I have been using a "hybrid" camera which combines the best features of an SLR and a point & shoot. My camera is the Canon SX20IS, which is no longer made... but they have the SX30IS now which has even more zoom. These cameras are smaller than an SLR, have more zoom than a SLR 300mm lens and all the features of an SLR body, plus they cost a lot less!

I love my SLR, but when I am out in the marsh my SX20IS is smaller, less expensive and still takes fantastic photos. The SX30IS has a 30x optical zoom and does video as well, all for less than $500. Just another option to keep in mind....
