We arrived in Orlando yesterday and my wife wants to take an air boat ride/swamp tour.

Do any of you Florida folks have any recommendations? what makes a good swamp tour? I know that #1 on her list is seeing a BIG alligator.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Rocky,

I recall a place by the name of The Long Cabbage or Log Cabbage... It's on the St. John's River in West Cocoa just east of Orlando by half hour. It's on highway 520. I just asked my kids if they remeber the name of the place neither of them did but they both remembered the Captains name Capt. Dead Pan and Capt. Bruce Gator.
I just placed a call to a friend that lives close by to make sure I wasn't sending you astray she said it was windy today over there so call before you go. Do a goolge search maybe it might pop up, who knows.. Air boat rides were cheap enough. And Its was March and we still saw a few really big gators. It was a neat little place to go.. Riverside... Good place to see some good ol boy southern locals.. I think they have live bands playing on Sundays. When I was a kid it was a place that all the bikers would hang out at on the weekends..

Order up some Gator tail and fries after the ride. It's good fixins.

I grew up in Cocoa Beach Fl. If you make it to the beach go to Cocoanuts Bar on the beach in CB. Sundays they have a bikini contest that I think you might enjoy... Plenty of sights to see.. lol.. Good Luck Ed

I went on an air boat ride with these folks when I was in FL in October. It was a first for me. They take you around the edge of a big lake (basically a big swampy backwater area) for an hour and we saw several gators and a lot of coots and moorhens. It's a pure racket for them but something you wouldn't get to see otherwise. It was one of the cooler things I did on my trip to FL.

The best bang for your buck airboat tour:

My personal friend Scott Swartley...a few here have been on his tours, nothing like the loop around the lake with lone cabbage twister, Scott's tours are interactive and much longer in length.

Thanks guys, we'll check em out.

Ed: my wifes says no to the bikini contest.

Today we went to Cocoa Beach, did some shopping, walked on the beach, and had lunch on the pier.

I've gotta say there is only one guy to take an airboat tour with and that is Scott Swartley. My family and I went with Scott last spring and we had a great time.

Scott's the nicest guy I ever met, and he won't let you off that airboat until you've had a close encounter with the gators and whatever else he can put you on and in front of. He's a Florida born Cracker boy to the core and he's the best way to experience Florida waters and tradition on an airboat.

We're leaving for Orlando tomorrow morning to watch the Capitol One Bowl on New Year's Day. Looks like 20+ friends and family converging between now and Dec 31st and I know I'll start exploring as soon as we get checked in. Sounds like Scott comes highly recommended so if time and circumstances allow I may look him up too.

I was looking thru his website and even saw a picture of two turkeys...one dead one and another one I recognize holding him up for the camera. Looks like maybe Steve took a side trip from last years duckhunting trip with Hitch and Dani
