outlaw duck calls and other contemporary calls..

I am a call junky, and I love buying and owning good calls, even if they stay in a drawer while I take my old dependables out in the field. My favorite mallard call and the call I use best is a 1970's Danny Sprague (Former World Champion from Buffalo, Iowa) single reed call. I have never found a call that is its equal, day and day out. But I still try, buying others for backups, hoping to find one that blows similar to his and has the wide tonal capabilities of his. I have a 40 year old Rich 'n Tone bois d' arc call that is as close as I have come to Danny's call in tone and range. I am considering buying a Quack Shack Outlaw call in either acrylic or cocobola as my next foray into call adultery. I want a call that is relatively easy to blow and has a wide range, getting into a very high/young hen highball and comebacks, but finishing up with nice raspy, ducky quacks and feeding chuckles. Before I plunk down $120 for a mail order acrylic call, I'd like some feedback from duck boat members who own or have used Quack shack calls.
  1. If you have any experience with the Quack Shack Outlaw calls, please rate them as a good, bad, or mediocre hunting call; ease of blowing; range (high to low with few breaks or flat spots), etc.
  2. If you have a different brand call you'd to recommend, please do so, including dealers sources for acquiring
  3. If recommending a call, please specify the model you use, and why you recommend it..........
Thanks in advance for the advice and input...............

I know this isn't what you are asking, but you piqued my interest and I checked their website. I would not buy a call with a skull and crossbones on it, nor would I buy anything with the name "outlaw", but that is just me.

Like you I just don't get the skull and crossbones engraving on duck calls that so many makers are doing. What is with this wanting to project some image of danger? A clorox bottle has skull and crossbones on it and I won't put my lips on it....

Only HARDCORE waterfowlers can use a call with skull 'n bones! Makes for good barrel stickers too. That way when you carry your shotgun on your shoulder by the barrel everyone can see it.

Love the name. A good friend of mine here on Long Island has Outlaw Guide Service.. I've been gunnign ducks and geesefor 50 years and I never claimed to ne an angle.

thanks for the post, but help me out............I understand your esthetic concern, plus the concern that the "outlaw" image is a negative that many sportsmen and women object to. So if this call's name and images on it offend you, what call do you use, and what calls can you recommend?

As a side note, I basically find that their TV show generally has low/poor content, but the calls do sound good. The sound of the calls and their tonal range were the only factors that inclined me to consider owning one. It was certainly not the program or the actions of the presenters on the Quack Shack TV program..........

Thanks,

Mike

X2 on the skull and cross bones. Just does not do anything for me.
If it's a good call you could always paint it.

Almost like the new era of non-bikers flaunting their Sons of Anarchy clothing. I was on line at a store one day and I had my leather jacket on. The guy behind me was full of all this SOA crap and covered in Skull and cross bones. He asked me if I like the show. I said I never watch it and don't care to. I asked him what he was riding because the only bike outside was mine and he replied he doesn't ride. It's to dangerous...So I asked, what's with outlaw biker look. He said it's cool. I must be getting old because I just don't get it...

Jack, I'm basically referring to the recent overwhelming number of makers of call, and other gear, that decorate their gear with imagery that suggests "badass." I'm a simpleton duck hunter and don't care for company logos trying to make me look badass or legit out in the field. Leave that stuff to fans of MMA.

Easily distracted, arent we??? :)

I have been using the same cheap Faulks single reed for over 12 years, its about the only call I can make the short double quack of a gadwall hen on.
Other than that I use a diver call of an unknown make and a wigeon whistle.

Mike,

I'm with Eric and others who tend to shun the Outlaw and Renegade, etc. monikers. My two primary calls are Hambones.

The top call of Vermillion (Paduk) I purchased 39 years ago, the lower Bois d'Arc call 38 years ago. I also have a Cocobolo Rich-n-tone by Butch 1982 vintage and a 1985 Red Rocks Game call (Tom Weigel) in Coco.

I've been using Mallardtone since 1965. I'm just to damned old to be a badass! Last time I had a skull and crossbones on amything was when I was kid and we made a raft that my dad forbid me to put in the river!...lol

I am feeling very altruistic and understand the feelings about having a skull and cross bones on a duck call and if you send the call to me I will remove it free of charge. Of course you will have to pay for shipping and handling.

As a added bonus I will bestow a Viking blessing. You have the right for various reasons to refuse this offer.( I know monks didn't like Vikings )

I have no idea how the call sounds but for that price you would want a guarantee ( : 0 )

Mike,

I use a call from a local call maker - Kelly Gadus. I have been using the same call for a long time now. I like the range of volume it produces - soft for the local marshes/river and high if I ever want to scream at them on a bigger lake. Good ducky sound and reasonable price. Plus I like supporting a local guy.

I want to add a MLBob call but have been too lazy to put a check in the mail. Will get around to it.

I tend to think that buying a call is like buying a suit. You have to try it on and make sure it's right for you. Some guy on here might love the Reelfoot style calls, but he might have the lungs of a Tenor and you just might not be able to put enough air into it to get your 'right' sound. Go someplace where you can test each call, take notes and select a favorite. I'd favor something outdoors. Does DU still have a show up there?

X2...except I didn't have to check their website to know I wasn't interested, the outlaw name was enough. I don't call much, but I like to have one or two hanging around my neck...

Dave Larsen giganormous duck call and Bob Furia goose call

For mallards and blacks; started w/ Glynn Scobey, metal reed - more suitable to huge areas & heavy pressure
Now using Wendell Carlson hand tuned - hasn't lost its tonal range in 30 years

For woodies; found a nice unknown maker wooden call that they apparently like, chirps and squeals nicely

For geese; started with a Glynn Scobey but couldn't consistently double cluck and yelp - handler incompentence
went to Sean Mann 'Eastern Shoreman' - easy to blow, love its high range, lots of online recordings
now learning a salt marsh cedar by MLBob Furia, wood provided by Al Hansen - love its low tones and moaning capability

Purchase what you feel you would like. I have never heard a Quack Shack call in use or blown one myself. Your preference. I do like the short barrel in the call that seems like you can make all kinds of sounds on very short breaths instead of blowing your face red everytime an approaching flock was close.

Some recommendations of calls that I have used with great success:

Tim Grounds-Sweet Meat
For a pure duck call that can make soft whines and "puuts" that sound like a grain of corn or rice caught in the throat all the way up to the high balls that sound ducky and not ridiculus I would go with a Tim Grounds Sweet Meat...

RNT Classic:
A second call I would recommend which is hard to beat is a single reed RNT classic once you tune your call to your liking.

DR-85 or VMT-90
These third and fourth calls are hard to beat is a DR-85 or VMT-90 by Haydel.

Regards,
Kristan
