Painting 3M 5200

How soon after using 5200 can I paint it? I was sealing up the little seam leaks on my AeroCraft yesterday and it is tacky today. As it says on the tube, full cure should happen in 5-7 days. Can I paint it before then?

Nope...........well, you can paint it but it may not stay. The solvents are still coming out of the 5200 and that can keep the paint from curing.
Let the 5200 cure and then throw some paint on it. As I recall, water speeds up the cure of 5200 but Mark W. will be the expert here.

Good enough for me...I'll have to find something else to do today.

Wife wants to golf but the doc said not for 6 weeks after surgery...maybe I'll ride in the cart and guard the beer

Hmmmmmmm, I didn't know you golf? Let's golf someday. I only hope that you golf as good as you fly fish..........let's put money on it. Oh, hold it, let's not bet until I see how you golf.
Guard beer...shouldn't you be guarding the Sapphire?

There is some similarity between my fly fishing technique and my golf game...

I hit the water just about as often, regardless of which one I am doing

Yep. moisture helps speed the cure cycle. Never hurts to spray a little fine water mist on both surfaces to be bonded prior to applying the 5200. Then stick together.

I would wait the recommended amount of time prior to painting. Not so much for solvent evaporation (there is no"free" solvent), it is a 100% solids formulation, but so that if there is any shrinkage, your paint won't crack when the bond pulls back a little.

I've never had any kind of paint I've used in the past stay on 5200 regardless of the cure time. You could use some thin ply glued to the 5200 and paint that. Wonder if FME would adhere better than other paints ? Lou...

I have fixed seam leaks with black marine tex and had some success painting it.

Good luck,
Harry
