Painting the BBIII...."pics"

Well I got a coat of Lou's FME on her today. I have decided not to paint the front storage area, I just like the way it looks. I will let her dry for a day and then add a second coat. Like Lou says "thin you win". I am installing the grass rails later in the week, if I have time, before she goes to Clayton for a dodger by Dave. I am going to paint the front storage bulkhead before I install my gas shelf and battery shelf.

how did you prep? Did you spray or roll? Dave

Sanded wit 80 grit, wiped it down a couple of times real good with a damp cloth. Let her dry and wipe it down again with a tack cloth. Foam rollers IMO are the best

Charlie,awesome-awesome -awesome great work on the paint job, good talking to you today as well, lean on Dave for me extra heavy LOL, this next week, talk to ya soon Brian Rippelmeyer

Looks great Charlie!!! Take a nice long look she will never look that perfect again. But dont worry she wont really be your boat until you feel comfortable leaving her sitting out in the weather with nothing covering her :)

Charlie,

I haven't commented much on your posts but I've followed them and enjoyed each one. You've done a very nice job and should be proud of your work. At first, it was a bit hard to tell what color you were painting it. The first few pics almost look like a blue for layout hunting. It's obvious in the later pics that it's a marsh brown color. Congrats and I look forward to seeing what type of dodger you and Dave work out.

Looks great Charlie. Boat looks beautiful. On the "thin you win"...

You will need more than two thin coats on your duck-boat.
Two thin may be quick, but not very thick.
It will rub right through if you only do two.
You need abrasion resistance and when you have glossy wood patches you will be pissed.
Epoxy needs protection from UV, you can paint it thick now or wait and see.

Tod, what is your experience/suggestion on number of coats? What prep do you do between coats? Will 1 gallon do a 12ft Sneakbox?

TIA, Dave

I roll iParker on from the can nice and thick (not thick enough to run, obviously) and two coats is my starting point. I just sanded my hull to the bare epoxy and put 3 nice meaty coats on it. 2 coats for general areas and 3 for high wear. This is not using a primer and you need to have paint on there to give UV protection if nothing else.

Charlie,
The boat looks fantastic- I have really enjoyed watching it come together, and can not wait to see it under power!

Take care!

Charlie

You made the right decision to wait to complete you boat this spring. The results prove it.

Nice work.

80 grit? Not 180? Seems awful coarse? What have others used to prep? TIA, Dave

No that is about right, I use anywhere from 60 -100 for the finish sanding. You can't see the sanding marks. If you have your epoxy topcoat built up nice and thick liek Charlie had you don't have to worry about cutting into your glass you can use coarse sandpaper on a random orbit like he used. I like the pink disposable furry rollers (store them in your paint can don' t dispose after one use). I have used the foam, I'm faster with the pink furry rollers and don't get as many areas of overworked paint as with the foam.

Thanks for all the compliments guys,it really means a lot coming from a bunch like we have here.
Tod.Thanks for the advice. I just got back inside after giving it a second coat. I will give it a third late tomorrow.

Dave....Are you ready??

Charlie,

How is it hardening up? Don't put a second or third coat if you scratch at it with your fingernail and can scratch through it.
