Pancake Decoy Photos?

I have decided pancake decoys would fit my needs better than taller decoys. I plan to make a rig of 4 dozen of them in various species. Tried searching for photos on the web but not much luck. Looking for photos for inspiration. Anyone have any photos of your pancake style decoys?

Thanks!

Try googling Jim Kelson decoys from Michigan. I have a few of his decoys they are made out of
balsa. They float really nice.

If you search "flattie" on the forum under John Bourbon you will find a few pictures. I've been planning to make some like his for about 6 years now. :)

Thanks for the replies!

George, Maybe someone else will email you and post the photos here for everyone to see. Might be inspiration for others? I don't know how to post photos here. It would be nice for the whole class to see because I am sure others would love to see your nice work. If they are anything like your regular decoys I know they look great!

Hi lee. If you search using my name and the word Flatties, there is at least 8 threads that come up, most of which have pics attached. If you want more, PM me wth your email address, and I will send some pics from my phone.

I forget how many guys from the forum have some of my flatties, but its quite a few. If you decide you want some, drop me a PM.

I was thinking about makeing some of these a couple years ago then life got busy and I stopped carving, things have settled down and yesterday when deploying the long lines I thought to myself I need to get rid of what plastics I have left so this post is good timing! Do the flatties need a keel? if they do have a keel will they self right without adding to much lead? I have some 2x8 western red ceder I plan to use for bluebills.

George Williams should be able to help you out he has a bunch of pancakes
Bomber, do you have pics of them you can post? If not, i will shoot some off to ski to do for the old jedi!

They are coming your way--Neat discovery--The bsc ones with bottom boards were from 1978079, the two inch without boards were my intro to Wiley, in 1980. We had some fun with those flatties, for sure.

Hi Neal. The flatties don't need a keel to stay upright. I've hunted mine in some pretty rough water and I don't think I've ever had one flip on me. Having said that though, if you were to throw one out and it have it land upside down, they don't self right.

2x8 red cedar ought to work nicely for flatties. Here's a hint for you, before you attach the head, drill a few holes into the head, up from the bottom to lighten the head up. Since they usually don't have keels, there is no counterweight to the head weight to ensure the deek floats level.

John

John, they are pressing the edge of my beginning-Some of the earlier corks, for sure-I did get them to self firgh, simply by using a staple and hanging a 6 oz. sinker where the thing balanced-When the deke went over, the weight fell to one side, keeping it upright. They were state of the art back then--note rasping on the heads--I really liked the texture the rasp left-Really gave the paint something to bond to. Gotta measure the heads, but i think they were 12/4 sugar pine. Sure is fun looking at the pre power tool stuff once in a while.
Jeff, thanks for the photo post-Now i know who to boreass with pictures!!

What the heck OBI! I was just sitting down to upload.

I guess I've been traded in for a more prompt padiwan.

Great flatties you made way back when. I'd love to do a rig of 4dz. or so, and might just do that if I ever thought we were gonna have a suitable duck season again.

Chesapeake Sioux...... When you gonna come up to AK? Bring George, I have a Foredom and a forest of Sitka Spruce that needs to be made into salmon egg-eating mallard butts.

he Lilly, if you have it all cut, dried, squared up, i'll be right up. Still trying to get Sue to go to argentina with us this year. Gotta change that quote, adding --...wanted to make ducks,,,,
Stay warm. Understand you all are actually having winter, despite what the global warming loonies would have us believe.
Man, after looking at the pancakes, i may just mess with a mini rig of them--Need to get my head into some of obiretro stuff!
