Pearl on the big water

I was fortunate to be able and get out a couple days last week for some sea duck action. Weather was good and seas were pretty cooperative. This was Pearl's first adventure on the ocean. She handeld the big water just fine, she did have a lot of top water distractions though, the three dozen decoys and about fifty or so lobster trap bouys bouncing around on the surface really added to the learning curve, certainly not the pond landscapes of last week. She is learning and figuring things out very quickly. She'll be 8 months on Tuesday, 53 retrieves so far...Looking forward to having her around for a long time.

Troy, I"ll bet that smile you have on your face when watching Pearl retrieve ducks actually is difficult to remove! What a great way for her to start her retrieving career---reps, reps, and more reps. Enjoyed those pictures.

Bob, I have a local guy that makes my sea duck decoys. The Scoters are brand new this season, restle coated burlap over foam. The eiders I have from him are simply burlap over foam. Not sure which coating I like best, the restle coating is harder so they endure a little more boat banging around, but when shot, and they do get shot, it's brittle like hard plastic. Easy enough to repair though.

Thanks guys...

Hey Troy- I wonder if that Brant came from the same flock I was Saturday afternoon while surfing and fishing at Higgins?

Thinking you are correct... Must have been 20-30 birds in the flock. Thought they were cormorants, as we had seen hundreds on Saturday. Realized at the last minute they were brant.

That brant is a Maine trophy. I've only ever seen them after the season has closed, usually in spring around Scarborough and Cape Elizabeth.

Looks like I may need to sneak down your way for a hunt and see if a few more can be found.

Nice job with the dog (and the birds)! Looks like a nice calm day for her first trip on the ocean. It really seems to help when you introduce new things to dogs nice and easy like. Take your time with them and you'll rarely need to go backwards.

You are right John... they were relatively flat days, a little rolling swell but overall a great setting for days one, two and three. I had been holding off for a good stretch. I'll still be picking the days for the remainder of the season that I bring her on the sea duck hunts. The last thing I want is for her to get scared out there. So far she is all in and game on the entire hunt. She has gone through the longlines great. I added lenght and weight to the droppers in order to hopefully eliminate any potential hazard there.

Safe hunting.

I thought they were shags at first, but then they started the wavy line brant thing.... I commented to my son- holy ****, those are brant....
