Got this nice little jewel from my good friend and hunting partner. Ruger #1 Tropical in 375 H&H, like new condition. Barrell inscription reads "Built in the 200th year of American Liberty". He decided he didn't need 2 375's so he brought this one over to me. It's not a duck gun but I'm still excited to own it! Might have to give moose hunting a try! It shoots as good as it looks.

Nice wood on that beast. Did you shoot it off the bench or freehand? I load 250 gr Sierra boatails in my Whitworth to about 2700fps and they aren't to bad ....300 grainers make me flinch a bit. Make sure if you scope it, to get one with a LOT of eye relief.

I always liked these Tropical Rifles by Ruger. I saw a gal take a Cape Buffalo with one in .416 the other day on TV. When Ruger came out with the Number One single shot big game rifles were not popular and they did not sell well.

Today, it's a whole different thing. It seems like all I see are the TC single shots being used for big game everywhere, same as all the B.P. guns being used today.

I have a No. 1 in .338 Win Mag and love it!

Bought it on Gunbroker a few years back. I added a simms recoil pad to it and it really made it a joy to shoot.

Hi Lee!

I've only shot it off the bench so far. Damn nice groups. I've been loading mostly cast bullets so far with a few jacketed 250 and 300 gr Sierras for the occasional wallop! There's a guy here is Cedar Rapids that casts, packages and sells bullets through the local gun shop. He does a damn nice job and the prices are reasonable, $8.95 per 100 for 375 gas checked bullets. And you're right about the 300's, they thump a might bit! As far as the wood goes it's about the nicest I've ever seen on a Ruger.

I kind of figured we might have some #1 fans around here!

Love Number 1's. Got my 70, so now it is on to saving for a Ruger in Tropical Layout. Don't have too many Rhino or Kudu here, but I think every guy could use an Elephant rifle in his safe. Boy do I miss Bill Ruger.

Except for one year when I shot a deer with my Dad's Model 71 Winchester for 'old time sake' the Ruger #1 has been my only big game rifle since I got it in 1970. The 7mm Mag is overkill for deer but they sure don't go far. That's a Bushnell Scope Chief in 2.5-8 --back when Bushnell made good scopes.

I had one in 25-06...a model 1B that had some great wood on it....sold it when a guy offered me twice what I paid for it. I always wanted one in 45-70 but never saw one available when I was in the mood. They are a pleasure to look at and a lot of fun to hunt with.

I know what you mean. My second choice has always been a 45/70 and I think that it would be a more ideal caliber for the Wisconsin woods than a 7 mag.

Pete,

That's a good lookin' piece you got there too! It appears Ruger might put their nicer looking wood on the Tropical model.
