Picking Away at Em

After sitting out some of the first splits here in NJ due to prior commitments I finally started to make up for it lately. My fishing buddy Tom has been bugging me to take him for a while and now that I have the two man boat I finally got him out. His previous duck hunting experience has been pass shooting wood ducks in swamps so I got to show him what gunning birds over decoys was like. We were treated to a fun teal shoot with some bonus mallards. He couldn't believe there were faster and harder to hit birds than wood ducks but before we had even picked up the rig he was asking about going again.

After a week of sending me craigslist ads for duck boats Tom was ready for his next adventure the following weekend and met my dad and I at the ramp already in his waders ready to go. Naturally things were a little slower, but we still managed to scratch out a few mallards and a black duck for the morning. We had one particular mixed group work in picture perfect and that about sealed Tom's newfound waterfowling addiction. I'm just glad I have a two man boat now!

The weather hasn't exactly been conducive to great waterfowl hunting lately, but hopefully that changes soon. I'll have the travelling puddler starting soon so I'll try to keep it going!

Some pics from the last month or so...

Figured I'd try to liven the place up a bit! I have been very busy at work lately so it felt good to get back into my hunt before work groove, even if I'm useless by 4pm... but that's what the Starbucks tall boy cans are for.

It could just be my luck, but something I have noticed so far this season is hunter effort seems to be way down. Even on Saturday openers I've been seeing far fewer guys out on the marsh and at ramps. I'm not complaining by any means, but I just wonder if last year broke a lot of folks.

Just got off the phone with a friend of mine who hunts the long point area [Ontario] and has yet to kill his first duck. I used to schedule my trips up there mid october and did quite well, not this year. Gotta be the weather.
So you guys are doing great, thanks for the pictures, two solid hits in one frame, amazing.

Love the black duck painting edit

Just got the battery pack in the mail and looking forward to being able to film longer, thanks for the tip Craig

Craig,

Would you mind telling us what app or software you used to convert the photo to a "painting"? It's really cool.

Great pictures and glad to see you guys are having some success. Hopefully they will make it down this way.

Andrew - That's an app called Prizma, you have to crop the original pic to a square (really intended for instagram) but it has some neat effects in there.

It looks like the beginning of next week might start some more seasonable weather for a lot of us, I'm off for a good portion of the week for the holiday so hopefully we get a little push of birds so I'm not racking up the miles and EZ Pass bills for nothing.

If I was smart I'd be upland hunting with my dad and his 8 month old setter while the weather is still mild.
