Picture Tuesday: First speck and some giants...

We've had a steady influx of birds headed north. We usually see some specks during the spring migration. I can honestly say I've never had a shot at one don't recall ever seeing one while hunting. There are quite a few around and I was pleased to find out that they respond to speck calls quite well and decoy fairly well too! I killed my first the other day and was elated. I would've like to have mounted it but it landed in a big thorn bush and was torn up a little bit. We're gonna roast him tonight. The big gander on the left is a bull of a honker. Happy New Year!

Uh Jay, did you really mean an "influx of birds headed North"? Granted over here on the east coast winter has not shown up, but isn't it a littler early for the spring migration? I'm still hoping for some birds to show from the north.-j

No, I meant going north. I don't know that I'd call it the spring migration but there are lots of birds moving north. We've had birds moving north for over 2 weeks. All the usual spring suspects are here....lots of long sprigged pintails, teal, specks etc. The guys in Michigan over the weekend had tons of flight birds and even shot woodies which are headed north. The day I shot the speck we decoyed hundreds of ducks that were headed north...flock after flock. The season is closed unfortunately.

All the Malalrds I've seen in the last 6 weeks seem to have been paired up also. Wish those "hundreds" of northern migrators would have made their way to my lake. Actually there is a ton of birds around but without ice to concentrate them, they are spread purdy thin. Congrats on the geese Jay..hope it tastes as good as the Canadas.

Jay, treat that spec kindly!! Among the best tasting of waterfowl, imo.
go for meduim rare, if you can---super eating goose-love their sound, too
