Decided to take the boys (6 and 8) out for the last weekend of 2006. Extremely cold, but the boys stayed warm in sleeping bags under a tent in the boat, they slept most of the morning, only waking up as the dads were packing it in due to the ice. Picture were taken by Eric Dellamater.
Here is a pic of me chasing down a cripple, about seven shots later and about a mile out, I lost the bird.
Here is what the decoys looked like when we packed it in.
Notice the ice on the boat, was about 3/8 to 1/2 thick
The results of the hunt. The one and only mallard I took all season. Getting him was a story and a half. The short of it is, I finished off someone elses cripple, with a lot of work, one cold dog and two boys cheering me on.
