Above: Michigan bird. Worked him for over 3 hours off the roost, moved 4 times. He came across a 40 acre cornfield to decoyless me.

Above: Indiana bird. This guy was a hardsell. We started chatting at 4:50am and I didn't seal the deal until 9:40. He left me 3 seperate times with hens as far as a half mile away which allowed me to move closer to his preferred strut zone. And then he came in directly behind me. I had a tiny window to turn and shoot. 1 1/8 spurs and an 11 inch beard. His fan is incredible....definately one to remember.

Above: Wisconsin bird. This guy's buddy was reluctant to come in because a nasty hen was strutting and growling and cutting at my decoy. One tom left...the other one stayed. The next morning we finished 5 toms at the same time...they were all around us. A great way to end the season.

The best part....the mushrooms seemed to sneak up on me for a change. I kept forgetting my mushroom bag! I swear the tree frog never did see me. That's a camera held at about 8 inches from him on the macro.

And a few quiet evenings on the stream. What a spring.

Great pictures Jay!

Nice gobblers. I had to settle for a jake this year. It's just as well though, because I was too busy to get in the woods (or on the stream) as much as normal years anyhow.

What stream is that? It looks nice.

... find the time to get away from the family???
How is everyone doing in the Anglin houshold now?
Getting any sleep yet?

Give Stanley an ear scratch for me.

Take care.

Wait a min. thar son.... How did you get out of the house, and to three states no less?
All nice birds and an sweet looking stream to fish on those "Land Locked" fish you and Steve were talking about.
The way the papers over here on the east coast are talking it sounds like you guys may not have any fish left in a year or two. What is the real deal with the fish disease Jay?

Hey Jay,

How's the new additions doing? I'm amazed you were able to sneak away from your diaper duties. We have added two new grandsons since I last saw you in March... Grandpas (or, "Bunka"(s) as I am called by my 4 year old grandson) have no diaper duty!... Keep that in mind in 25 years when you become a "Bunka"... LOL!

Nice birds, great pictures! Didn't have to drive south this year to have my fun. I'd post a picture but I'm not smart enough to dumb down my pictures to post on here. I have Harker as my witness though. This season was the first time I have hunted up here since helping my Dad get a big tom in May 2004. Before that it had been 17-18 years since I tried working birds among the 'room hunters and hen stalkers of N. Indiana. Of course that problem is now solved. Our 2004 hunt was the last bird my Dad took (he was 79 that April 2nd) and, the last time I got to hunt with him. I lost my Dad on April 16th (he had just turned 82 two weeks before)... Glad I stopped by with MacGyver after the MLB Hunt, he seemed to enjoyed see my old dog that day.

Will you be at the MLB Shoot on June 3rd?

Do you know if Scott F. has left the area? Can't seem to get a rise out of him. He must really like those oars I loaned him for that Montana hunt... LOL!

Jay,

All this time I've been feelin sorry for you, thinking you haven't been posting because you've been locked indoors all spring with the babies. I should've known better.

The photos are great--and I'm glad to see you are getting out.

Rick

Thanks guys. Here's the deal. The Michigan bird, I was home cooking breakfast before anybody was up and safely delivered the chilluns to school(BECAUSE IT WAS A LATE DAY!). 3 weeks later, the Indiana bird...I found that roost the previous morning on a quick scouting run. I had made arrangements with the neighbor lady to help Angie in the morning and one of the teachers picked them up for school. The Wisconsin deal was more complicated but in the original plan Angie's mom was going to be here which means...regardless of what I do I won't be here. When that fell through my mom was gracious enough to sneak away from her laborious life of shopping and doing nothing and help out for a few days. And yes, if you were curious I am completely broke...the non-res tag was supplied by my gracious host who I "guided" on his first turkey hunts. He even applied for me back in December. He missed twice.

The fishing...well that's been my job lately so like any job I've ever had I emmerse myself into the tradecraft ) Plus, that was the weekend my mother in law was here so it was socially exceptable to skip town. The river is in SW Michigan...can't say any names. As far as pandemic diseases and water fleas and mussels and Asian Carp and all the other nasties that are going to make the fishery collapse...ma nature is pretty resilient. I think it will put a dent in it but not sure if it'll be noticeable. If it completely collapses I'd be surprised.

Incidentally, on the Wisconsin trip I got food poisoning on the way up...pretty sure it was ecoli from ground beef(there was a recall the very next day). I think I slept a total of 6 hours in three days. That's why I'm not smiling in that photo...I had run out of toilet paper.

I'm really into the turkey big time. After the Wings lost game 6 in the conference finals the other night and turkey season is officially over for me....well I was depressed. But, I caught a musky yesterday so I feel a little better )
And before anybody freaks out I should point out that I was "pre-fishing" as I had an evening gig yesterday.

I should also take this time to thank those that helped out and allowed me to go hunting. But then again, when it's twin girls they practically fight over the babies...so in a way I'm helping them out. Sorta.

Thanks for clearing that up for us Jay. I'm sure we were all wondering what happened to your characteristic smile in that photo--and why the awkward crouch.

Nice pictures, great looking birds. Anyone ever tell you that you look a little bit like John Kruk?
Your a lucky guy...well other then that little ecoli thing.

Tim
