Pintail 72 burlap

Did herters use the same mold for pintails
and broadbills, looking to convert 1 doz
sprig to bills.
Thanks for any info

No they did not. They had separate diver molds. The tail section of puddlers stick up as opposed to the divers tail sweeping down to the water. Personally, I wouldn't sweat it. I've painted many puddlers into scoters/divers. Try a few. See what you think.

Dave,
There is a definite difference between herters mod.72 puddle and diver decoys. Recently i have seen herters pintail decoys in styrofoam that appear more pointed than even the mallard/black bodies. I think they may have had a separate mold for pintails. If anyone has any info. on the subject please chime in.
Bill.

Back in the late 1960's-1970's, Herter's did have a separate mold for
Pintail bodies. I have about 2 dozen like this that were given to me by
a friend that bought them in that timeframe. They are even made out of a green foam, not white.

I picked these up in Beaver Dam
at the Herters factory show room in 2003 ish.
before they closed. I'm sure the folks in that
area have a wealth of information on the
subject as well.

Back in the 1960's herters actually had several different molds.

In the 63 line they had a mallard, Pintail, diver and Coot body all of which were ran on steamers basically by hand just as people make them now with the decoys unlimited molds.

in the 72 line I am only aware of 2 bodies over the years however some feather detail changes were made but there may have been a 72 pintail body as well but I have yet to see one.

And yes many different colors of foam were used back then when they were made during the steam boiler days of hand producing them these bodies are all after the keel was added to them in the molds.

They also had rabbits, squirrels, crows, doves and even owls they made as well back in the day.

It would be neat to see a photo of all the different versions of the herters bodies and changes over the years. maybe someone someday will create a history site for Herters Decoys.
