Has anyone built a pirouge? I am looking for a set of plans that will produce a nice boat. However, I need to be able to carry some dekes, gun and me. I am about 250. but the water I am using it in is very protected. any suggestions?

I've built a pirogue using these plans :

worked for me quite well

it's a very light boat and I was quite happy with it...I added the crossbeam in the middle just to make it easier to carry....sometimes when i was using the boat (I gave it as a christmas present to someone so I don't have it anymore) I wished that I hadn't put in the center bar....I never used it with a dog, but just me (granted i don't weigh as much as you) and decoys and gear it was quite nice...I'd love to build another, but gots sooooo many other things on my list of stuff to do

How "tippy" are Uncle John's pirogues? I build a boat from a competitor's design and it was "squirrelly as heck."

I don't know how they compare to other pirogues....but it's "squirrely"....

but I've been told the more weight you put in them, the more stable they become.....

You really don't even need plans. It is a simple design that comes together nicely. I've built 2 out of regular 5mm and 1/4 inch ply., not marine grade. The epoxy for the glass overlay encloses the wood, but will eventually let in moisture if the piroque is used hard.

squirrely for sure, I put a small keel on the bottom of a few of mine which helped the tracking while paddeling, but I always preferred a push pole. I agree with dani - the more weight, the more stable to a certain point. I built mine a little wider than the plans called for also.
