Predator K140 paddle....

A question for any Predator K140 owners out there - what size paddle do you use? I know it depends on the height of the person paddling, just getting a sense for some options/opinions out there. I am roughly 5',9" tall.

Thanks in advance.

I base my kayak paddle length on the width of the boat not my height. In canoes I base the paddle on my height. Canoes, top of the foot to the chin for length if I remember correctly. In the predator I will have to measure the length of my paddle. I bought a longer paddle than what came with my predator when I bought it used.

We had our marsh boats out last week. One guy in a Carsten's Puddler had a very short kayak paddle. I let him use the long paddle for my aqua-pod. He was able to move his boat much better with the long kayak paddle.

Short paddle = little stroke.

Nate,

I'm 5'8" and use a 230cm paddle with a kayak that is 28.75" wide. Your predator is 31" wide. I have also used a 240cm paddle and that length would probably be the best match for the predator and your size.

One of my first paddles was one of these. I still have it in fact. It is extremely heavy (as kayak paddles go) but very durable. No fears using it as a push pole if needed.

I now use one made by Bending Branches. It is expensive, I paid right around $250.00 but it is a joy to use if you do much paddling.

230. Carlisle Day Tripper 230. It's what the guy at the old town shop suggested. It was the cheap aluminum and plastic one, not the carbon kevlar space age micro light things he tried to sell us first. Works fine for my recreational/hunting use.

PS. I'm 5'-10" and paddle an old town loon, which according to old town is out of the same mold as the Predator 140.

The predator 140 ia the same mold as the Twin Otter, not the loon, We sell/sold them both and the loon is slightly slimmer and tracks better but has not quite the cockpit space.

Guys - thanks for the input on the paddle. I went with a 230 cm paddle for the kayak. I took it out this past Sunday for a little toot around the cove near our house and it was great. I am looking forward to getting back into a woody spot this coming weekend. It should be good.

Thanks again.

Nate
