Product review...Lee Valley pneumatic sanding drum

Hey all,
Been dreaming of an Illinois River Carving Knife (IRCK for short, or some might refer to it as a Sandrite machine) for a while. Haven’t found a deal on a used one close enough to home, so Paully recommended checking out the drum sander that Lee Valley offers:

Got the “carvers size” (they offer bigger ones too):

Slide the sleeve on and pump it up:

Hogs wood pretty good:

I really like the way it smoothes the transitions in neck joints:

I was quite comfortable sitting on a stool holding the workpiece with both hands. It is not an IRCK, but it is FAR better than a padded sander...in fact, I'm quite sure my padded sander will stay on the shelf for all but a few jobs with very tight curves. You can mount these in flex shafts, but I wouldn't mount it in anything as light weight as a Foredom, besides, it has a 5/16" shaft. You can get a flex shaft to chuck in your drill press, or them make designated motors to run either with the drum chucked direct or through the heavier flex shaft...but I figure by the time you invest this much, you might as well just get a Sandrite.

All in all I am happy with my investment, it utilized a stationary tool I already have in space that is always at a premium.

Thinking of one of these for buoy birds to knock off the finish and contour them. Any one try it??? Looked for a sander like that from Grizzly or some other manufacturer.

Rich, Pneumatic drum sanders (in general) are great for smoothing out corners and should be perfect for what you want to do. Sandrite is the real deal, no doubt. The one Jim posted is a knock off, but for decoys it probably doesnt' matter enough. What I got I feel is great for what I spent. A new Sandrite with 2 drums is almost $1300 plus you'd have freight from Chicago on that. Used ones are out there, but they seem to be very regional in availability. I have my eyes on search engines for one in reasonable driving distance for a reasonable price. If you are thinking of trying the drill press drum for bodies, I'd go with the large (3.25"x5.25").

Jim, thanks for the link, I think that was the brand Paul mentioned a couple weeks ago. Watching for a used unit...any brand really.

Pat, yes, it is inevitable, but as of now, floor space is a premium, probably an even more limiting factor than price justification...now when I find the deal of deals I'll find a way to fit it in, but for now, I have 3 dozen coot to turn to dust.

If Chuck bought one he would need to build a barn to house his expanded shop and since he would have more space, probably have to buy a shiny new truck to properly utilize his new found space in the garage.

Both of you are seriously underestimating my ability to not spend money

You think I'd have an iPhone if I were paying the bill?
