Pu Hut Blind

Hello all. In the May/June issue of the DU magazine, on page 65 there is a neat looking little 1 man blind designed to look like a muskrat house. It interests me, but when I tried to access the web site mentioned in the blurb, I got an error message that said the web site was unavailable.

Have any of you guys ever used one of these, or know anything about them?

Thanks,

Looks like miserable way to hunt (where do you place gear, how does a gun fit in there, etc...). I also see it as being a way to hunt ducks that is very limiting. Have to hunt in the perfect depth of water, needs to be fairly calm as waves would be problematic, a big wind would blow the muskrat house all over, etc...

In MN an WI this method would be considered illegal as where he set up would be classified as open water which is a no no except for certain places.

For me, and the way I hunt, this would not be a workable solution. Interesting concept however.

I think I have an idea of a couple locations that John is thinking this might work, and while it is small, I expect a bag chair might fit inside, and where I am thinking the water is shallow and bottom sandy.... a pocket on the chair to hold extra shells, and a post with a shelf on it for the gun butt, and you would be in the middle of the action. Better than a layout or poke boat? Maybe not, but easier to shoot and stand up for us older guys!

I look at the distance from the water to the top of the muskrat house and can't see how a gun will fit in there without being "cockeyed' or having the butt end sticking in the water.

I've sat on those marsh chairs and for me they were very uncomfrotable after a short period of time. Tried a bunch of them and even made my own once.

Like I said, cool idea, just not my cup of tea.

I have had some good luck with my own version of the put hut.

Hey Rob, I love the pics of the daily bag with the A-5 in the background!

Dave and I have hunted together enough that I have no doubt he knows of the 2 or 3 places I'd like to put one of those blinds. I'd especially like to put one in the corn field behind my house on one of those rare moments when it floods during season.

I envision hauling the thing out there in my boat, parking my boat some distance away, and having a short hunt out of it. As a minimalist kind of guy, all I need is to wear waders, my coat and stuff my shirt pockets with a dozen or so shells. I like short barrelled double guns and have 2 that would work great out of that thing. Of course, the way Lake Champlain is this year, there is no shallow water anywhere! And if the weather doesn't break, there's not going to be any by hunting season either.

Dave, I will watch the video tonight when I get to work. My home connection draws a vaccum!

John, all I can tell you is to wait. I have been working on a similar concept but totally different design for about 7 years. We have them dialed in for the most part. I am hoping to have be ready by 2012.....

Well Ira, you have my curiosity up! Keep me in mind when you do get ready to unveil it. In the places I'd like to try something like that, the birds get used to boat blinds kind of quickly.....

John, do you still have the panels of chicken wire and phragmitis we made what, 20 years or more ago, in the attic of the barn? A little heavier perhaps, but similar idea?

I think I gave those to Frank last year. I'm not sure if they are in his garage attic or were swept away last season when the blind was swept away.

Now that I think about it, I think I have some of the similiar type panels I used on the first blind on that aluminum boat. They have to be 22 or 23 years old. And they are up in the barn.
